Hi all, I'm about to cover the baffle on a combo in the vox cloth and wondered if there are any tips on how to fit it? I seem to remember someone saying to wet it first?

Fit it soaking wet, it will dry like a drum skin

Along those lines is something I have done in the past is to install the cloth grill fairly tight making sure the pattern is straight then mist the cloth with water from a spray bottle and either let it air dry or a low heat hair dryer.

That's not wet enough for Vox Tom, if it is just damp it may not get tight enough and will then sag during high humidity.
Not a pretty sight :D

Literally plunge it into a bucket then dripping wet fit it to the baffle.

When it all dries out, Ginger Baker could jam on it!

My secret is out!!

Genuine Vox is a very unique cloth and if it's not wet when you apply it, you'll spend all this time lining up the diamonds and then July comes and it will be sagging like a baggy t shirt.

The first time I applied it wet I let it dry overnight and the next morning it was so tight I literally thought I forgot to cut out the speaker hole behind it.

I run it under the faucet and then squeeze it in a towel briefly.

Recently had a go at making this combo in faux suede...great fun! The amp is a 50w 102 . Special thanks to Taylor for his help with working with the vox speaker cloth....the result of which I am delighted with. I love this suede finish....the colour will be very much of personal taste!

Thanks Tom!!!! The colour isn't quite as bright as the photo suggests! Seems to me HAD has used some pretty funky colours with his suede covered cabs so I thought "what the hell"! I really like it! :D

Although I can't recall seeing a pink original, yours certainly has that authentic funky vibe to it. Great job!

Where did you get your faux suede? I must do get around to doing this.

Have a great weekend,

Paul.

Hi Paul, thanks for your comments! The faux suede is a very good upholstery quality cloth made by Warwick and called "macrosuede". I got it from an upholstery shop in Thame, Bucks.( Pretty sure Warwick has its own website.) It is really nice to work with and cost £32/m from a 1.6m roll (enough to do two 1 x 12' combo cabs). The grill cloth I got from Tubeampdoctor in Germany and cost @ 68 euros for a piece big enough to do @ four 1 x 12" combo fronts. I also got the Boogie style handle from them also. Hope this helps.
Hope YOU have a great weekend!
