This Guitar defines "Home Built"

Post by John_P_WI »

For any of you interested in building your own guitar, watch the following. The ingenuity and attention to detail is amazing, including winding his own pickups. I've been a mechanical engineer since the 80's and was floored by watching the build process, which encompassed something like 1200 hours. I guarantee you will watch all of the videos, at least once

Ok. Well then. roflmao! Unreal craftsmanship. Some brilliant design ideas when it comes to cat skinning!

Love the french polish job!

Did I ever show you the World's largest left-handed flying V made mostly of truck parts by a trucker in a truck? Long story.

Id send him a CNC. Talk about patience. You really need to understand all the physical/mechanical components of the guitar to create this. I appreciate his research and thought to detail which is not initially apparent until you start thinking about all the considerations to create this guitar.

In part1 at the end the wood chisel brought a particular tear to my eye. Why? I was redoing our laundry room last weekend and using an old beat-up wood chisel to pry up the old linoleum flooring. I ran over the home depot to get some paint and new floor before finishing. While gone my wife, bless her heart, decides to :"help" and instead of using the same beat up chisel I had sitting out next to all the tools, she takes the $50 chisel I just bought a couple months ago and was whacking at the floor with it when I came home. Ahhhh, the patience!

Haha, awesome! I have had that experience myself! Honey, those are my good drill bits. See? They say 'for metal' on them and the taper is different. The ones in the yellow box are what you should be using for that...

I don't think you can resaw boards on a cnc but I've never used one.Besides computers take the fun out of woodworking.

I had a guy I hired Take a vintage 2" chisel that I had spent hours on getting sharp to a concrete floor to use as a scraper beat on it with a hammer and everything.Needless to say he didn't work for me long.

That's pretty impressive.

But, he didn't put any binding on it!

J/K Very skilled guy but would go broke if he made them for a living.

Naw, I hear you. My jaw was hanging open during the build, and then he finally plays the thing at the end and I just had to laugh at the janky demo.

haha you had to go there.. shame!

It is as beautiful a concept and layout and.. I could make 20 Les Pauls in the same amount of time. The guy has great wood chops though. Really impressed the heck out of me.

Ah...what a wussy!! Couldn't even make his own machine heads!!

All kidding aside, that is some pretty impressive stuff. A real work of art!

Not sure how to objectively evaluate the tone though. Although I haven't played very many different guitars in my life, I have to believe that what we heard in the updated sound clip (e.g., not the builder playing I don't think) was influenced heavily by the normal things (e.g., amp settings, mic placement, player technique, recording technique/settings, etc..etc..etc..).

Could anyone hear something "off" that could be attributed to just the guitar design and build?

Regardless...one hell of an effort there!!

Thank you for sharing.
