Man, I was unaware of this pairing until recently.
They really sound good together.
Check out the riffs from Sonny around the 3:28 mark.

Re: EJ and Sonny
I've never seen EJ live, though I recall seeing him on cable TV and he's an impressive player -- really, I'd be pleased to have 1% of his talent and I really like some of his work a lot. As an entertainer, my impression is that he wears out the audience because he's always pushing so hard to show what he's got.
I've seen Sonny play up close in a small venue. I think he's got better dynamic and emotional range than EJ and is not such a hot dog. I was rather surprised to see them together. I think what Sonny does at 3:28 is just extraordinary. Somehow, he cops EJ's hot dog lick and turns it into his own.
Good pick. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks.

Pretty much mirrors my opinion too.
EJ does have some awesome chops but sometimes it's more in the quality of the notes than the quantity of them.
I forgot who said it first but sometimes the notes you don't play are more important than the ones you do.
Play for the song.
I really only became aware of Sonny Landreth after I got into Dumble amps.
He has a very unique slide technique which makes him stand out among slide players.

all should see johnson live!
I got the chance to see eric at a small club last time he came through denver . the show was an awakening , I have many videos shot of him in my collection but none do the live show justice .very tecnical playing but he is so engaging, verry much a players show . out of the shows I've gotten to see semi recently which include warren hayes and brad paisley . eric was the best show, and thats very hard to say after seeing warren they both have the touch I think the tie breaker was the hendrix eric played he was doing the experiance hendrix tour before I saw him and mixed a couple of jems into his set. on the clip that is posted above eric appears to be playing through a single twin or a super rev. if you havent seen him live please go to a show , the athourity he plays with is sureal ! No knock on sonny he definetly brings the flavor!

Re: EJ and Sonny
I have seen EJ many times and I couldn't disagree more with that statement. I have never had the feeling that EJ was showing off. In fact, I can't think of a more humble down-to-earth musician. I can't think of one lick that EJ ever played that did not serve the song. He is continuously inventive, IMO. In the past, his volume has worn out my ears. I think he has worn out his ears too. In general, I think the best tones go hand-in-hand with higher volume and he and his audience have been a victim of that, although he is not the first to travel that road.As an entertainer, my impression is that he wears out the audience because he's always pushing so hard to show what he's got.
That link to EJ and Sonny has POOR audio quality. EJ's guitar sound and tone is not captured at all IMO, although it might not have been there to be captured - I couldn't see what he was playing through. EJ's guitar sounds more like a banjo in that video.
Re: EJ and Sonny
I think I'm getting it. TV/utube just doesn't do justice to some guys. Instead of the artist telling the story, the cameraman does it. I'll have to see if EJ will pass by close enough for me to see him live. He's on my list!
I hope you understand, I wasn't trying to rag on the guy. No doubt there is a lot of talent there.
