Sourcing the big caps?
Finally getting serious about a build - a 124 (with precision power supply) and built-in d'lator.
Started with a set of boards from AGB and a Peavey MX Flite for chassis and iron. TIght, but I think I have a layout that will work (to be shared later).
Now, I have to buy parts. Starting from Joost's 124 BOM, I've got most everything I've looked for so far lined up.
What I can't find is the 330uF/385V axial caps for the main filters (remember, it's a PPS). Does JJ have a US vendor?

When I was building my 183, the amp that calls for those caps, the only place who had them in axial was Ceritone. I'm not sure who they use to manufacture but they feel and wiegh the same as IC. I have any extra set, PM if your need a set.

F&T makes 330uf axial caps, don't they?

Re: Sourcing the big caps?
Mojotone and AES/CE have these larger values. AES has a really great selection. I'm sure the Tube Depot does too, I have heard good things about them. I have purchased from mouser too, but selection isn't as good (shocking I know)

Re: Sourcing the big caps?
I didn't realize 124 had 150uf for the first stage...and that the 300uf caps were hard to find. I just looked for them and CE doesn't have values over 220uf..I doubt mojo does either.
Why is the filtering bigger on 124 than 102? Isn't the power supply taxed with virtually the same circuit?
Personally, I would just use the FT or TAD 220uf caps and call it a day. You would still be at 110uf for the first stage and you could get on with your build!!

Also, precision of electrolytic caps is often very poor (-10% to +50% of nominal is typical!).amplifiednation wrote:Personally, I would just use the FT or TAD 220uf caps and call it a day. You would still be at 110uf for the first stage and you could get on with your build!!

Honestly, I think sometimes we over think these things. I truly believe that in many cases HAD used whatever he had on hand at the moment.amplifiednation wrote:

Personally, I would be concerned with using caps with a similar ESR verses chasing some exact number.

Re: Sourcing the big caps?
the ordinary TAD filter caps are made in Asia, except for the Audio cap series that is made in Germany.

Re: Sourcing the big caps?
When you refer to ESR are you saying we should be concerned with getting a capacitor of a higher quality so ESR increase isn't a problem?ToneMerc wrote:Honestly, I think sometimes we over think these things. Or are there other advantages to matching ESR?

Re: Sourcing the big caps?
Taylor I've seen ODS's with a pair of 100's 220's and 330's.. I think Dumble uses what he has at the time as I see no real pattern with respect to filter caps on the plates..I say use a good quality cap and your best judgement..amplifiednation wrote:I didn't realize 124 had 150uf for the first stage...and that the 300uf caps were hard to find. How many Twins do we see that have 40uf on the plates?
If you like a softer low end and don't play at loud volumes for extended periods 50uf is plenty for hum in a 102 style (Feedback City).. If you like it tighter move on up..Tad's and F&T's are real nice I am not a big fan of either Xicons or IC's but that can be debated for days on end around here!!
AFA why 124 has more filtering could have something to do with the fact that 124 has a 250k level and 340k OD trigger as well as 10uf bypass caps..This could result in a an OD tone with more low end than the 102 circuit..183 also has more low end (250k level and drive) extra filtering helps keep the OD tighter on the way out..

Re: Sourcing the big caps?
Thank you, gentlemen - looks like I'm going with the TAD 220/350s.
Re: Sourcing the big caps?
Yeah, I swear I have bought F&T 330uF before from AES.
Unfortunately big value caps are not that much in demand in solid state devices.
