Eminence Cannabis Rex. Any thoughts in D style amps?

Post by rogb »

I just got a CRex yesterday and dropped it in my AB763 combo. This has a stock Vibrato channel and a separated vaguely D style Normal channel, with PAB, LNFB switched, NFB switched and Deep.

My standard speaker is a 30+ year old G12-65 with a tiny hole at the edge of the cone, I dabbed a touch of contact cement on it to stabilise it.

I figured it was time to get a spare in case it went completely.

Even though the CRex is brand new, it sounded great from the get go. It is 16ohm.
I am saving my G12 for my upcoming build, but so far I'm liking the Cannabis, man. 8)

Any thoughts and experiences would be welcome.

I have always wanted to try one of those.

Not a bad price either.

I ended up buying two EV 12L's.

I would also like to try the well liked Celestion G12-65's some day.

Apparently I'm gonna get even more good tones after a full 20-30 hour break in.

So far, gainier stuff sounds really smooth, I had to up the treble a tad.

The clean side also very full, plenty of bottom, no harshness in the highs. I had to ease back the bass at higher volumes. I only played it for half an hour but I will get some more time in on this next week.

The problem with a lot of good sounding speakers is that they can't handle the power of a 100w amp.

Not that I ever play that loud but it's nice to know your speakers can handle it just in case.

In the case of the Rex, am I reading that right, 102db sensitivity?

That would be great for a lower powered amp.

Yep 102dB, good and loud in my 25w D'luxe, it should be fine in a 50w as it is rated for 50w.
I wonder how a 2 x12 with a G-12 65 15 ohm and a CR 16 ohm in parallel would sound?
Should be good for 100w and 50w too @ 8ohm, I guess.

Anybody try the Scumback M75 LHDC 100 watter with their 100 watt "D" styles? I love the sound of the C-Rex but really need something that handles 100 watts. I've been using Jensen C12Ks and like some things about them but not others. The C-Rex was just about perfect except for the wattage.

I've put the G12-65 in a 1x12 extension cab, this sits nicely under the D'luxe combo, so next week I will find out how this outfit sounds :)

Looking forward to building my 50w #102 combo, I think this speaker setup could sound good. I will order another CRex I guess.

I recorded this with a Cannabis Rex and my Tweed Overdrive Special

And to illustrate that speaker with a cleaner tone, I did this with the Cannabis Rex and the D'Mars Overdrive Special

Underwent this in a D'Lite with TL boxes a few years ago:

For me the C Rex was a bit "Meh".... Not like 10thTx above that sounds way better.

Love that speaker with lower watt Fender amps, though.

Thanks guys, good to hear about some other CRexes in use :D

I'll get some hours in on the rig and record a clip if I get some time at the end of next week.

I have auditioned the C Rex numerous times and actually recommend the speaker in many Fenderish circuits. In the DClones the cleans are great, the OD channels sound bad, especially compared to a G1265. IMHO.

In the end tone is in the ear of the beholder. Or maybe the cabinet, or one's blood pressure that day, or how much abuse your ear took the day before, or how much junk was in the auditioning room. I have great respect for heisthl's ear, yet we have opposite opinions. In the end I guess you have to try it for yourself. If I had $10.00 for every speaker auditioned I could probably make a mortgage payment. LOL.
Some speakers I have auditioned sound terrible in the shop, yet great live.
