Hi gain tweaking?
How does one add more gain stages to a circuit to produce a metal sound? Would I need a different power tranny than the one currently used in order to accommodate the extra preamp tube(s)? What components must be added/ changed in order to add gain stages? Are there any simple schematics out there that show you how to engineer/ modify circuits in that respect?

Re: Hi gain tweaking?
Addressing your questions in order:
1) You need to understand the theory and practice of gain architecture.
2) Not necessarily, you just have to be able to add up the heater current of all desired stages and compare it with your PT's rated output from the 6.3 VAC secondary.
3) Tubes, resistors, pots and caps.
4) Early Marshall and Mesa Boogie, Soldano and Dumble.
For 1), read the TUT books, especially 1 and 5, Dave Funk's book, and get a copy of TubeCad software and play with it. duncanamps.com and aikenamps.com are two indispensable sites for more general topics.
For 3), see 1) above.
For 4), go to schematicheaven.com, the marshall forum, and the Dumble and Trainwreck sections of this forum.
You've come to a good place to start from, the rest is up to you. If you're looking for a high gain cookbook with no intellectual effort on your part, there ain't any.
