VVR in Liverpool

Well I did get some instructions from Dana.It looks like a bit more work than the garagetale guy shows.I still would like to see a picture of a Liverpool with one or a least a rocket. Patience Mikey

See if this helps. Compare Dana's instructions with the attachments. This is really the easy one to install because of the cathode biasing of the power tubes. The VVR goes in the power supply string and you add a couple of blocking capacitors. I moved the resistor from the input jack to the first preamp tube.

Another couple of shots. The third capacitor from the left is the blocking cap between C6 and V1a, pin 2. Note that mine is a little different because I paralleled the first preamp stage so on the picture it is wired to the second preamp tube.

BTW, I used the thermal compound on mine because I assumed that it was required. There is another recent thread where Dana makes a compelling arguement for not using the thermal compound. Mine works fine with it.

Probably not. AFAIK, it's electrically conductive.

You might want to try a sil-pad instead. Unlike mica, they don't need thermal grease.

Here are a few pics of a Liverpool (Ginger Clone) amp I built 6 years ago in 2006. Ginger was Ken's first Liverpool and had a 1/2 power switch that really wasn't all that usefull. I removed the 1/2 power switch and installed the older VVR2. If you go with the smaller filter caps you can just squeeze it in. The newer smaller VVR is easier to mount. BTW this amp has been used a lot over the years and the VVR is still functioning without fail.

No, That is a trim pot I installed in place of the 150k to dial in the third gain stage. it also has an adjustable line out on the back.
