Trainwreck cabinet
What do you guys think about using pocket screws to join the valance to the top and sides instead of cutting a dado. Seems like that would be quick and easy and just as strong...

Re: Trainwreck cabinet
I've only built one, I used a bisciut joiner and it worked beautifully. I think some of the other builders do as well. I am assuming the pocket holes would be on the inside, where they wont be seen. As long as they don't show, I dont see a problem with them. Thats one thing I love about building your own stuff....creative thinking!

Re: Trainwreck cabinet
It would certainly be easier to stain and finish the front first, then install it with screws.

Re: Trainwreck cabinet
Many ways to get there but I prefer the independent front panel for a variety of reasons and sometimes just so variety is an option... YMMV rj

I used RJ's method with my "drawer" cabs. Quick & easy.
Plus you can take the valence out again if you need to.

Why Aye Man
Valance
I think that any method will work.I can do them with removable valance.
But when it all is glued and tendoned together with a boatload of bessy clamps Man is it solid and your valance squares up the cab perfectly. But say you would like to change valances from time to time.Maple a light maple cab with a dark walnut valance then back to maple later. Oh no Am I sounding kinda Barbie dollish here
Whatever!!! Mike

I learned through furniture building to pre finish interior parts. I take masking and tape off my glue areas and finish and then assemble.
Here is a board I picked up yesterday. I planned to use a piece of it for the front valence on my K60. It is 5/4 Cherry , slightly over 8' x 10 inches wide and highly figured as well as curly. I have enough for a full c abinet plus my valence with some to spare.

Re: Trainwreck cabinet
Those interior cleats can cause interference if your transformers are too close to the front and or side chassis. I prefer to use them but if you want the cab to sit flush with the valence they can get in the way. This also depends on the thickness of the valence. Nothing is easier than mounting through the cleats. Mikey's got a good point about the valence squaring up the cab, that is a luxury!

I like your workshop Passfan,
I have a similar workbench in my little area. My dream is to eventually have a large detached workshop. All in due time.....

Re: Trainwreck cabinet
Thanks Jim. I've spent the last 12 years building it. You just have to bide your time and quietly amass.
