6V6s straight replacement for EL84s in a Rocket?

Post by LarryLarry »

Are 6V6s close enough spec-wise to EL84s to use in a Rocket? I have a 5E3x2 I built that is calling me to re-build!

The 6V6's enjoy higher voltage but yes you could build a four 6V6 Rocket with the same transformers.

I built a JCM 800 2204 50W circuit into a BF Champ custom chassis using 280-0-280 TW iron and 4K3 Dynaco style OT. The amp is loud as hell and sweet tone. The TW iron is rated high so it can put out some volume even though the plate voltage is lower.

I'm on vaca right now but don't 6v6 also require around 2x the input signal to overdrive them at the same point, vs an el84?

The PT I'm using right now in the 5E3x2 is a Weber 022798 using the 660V (330-0-330) secondaries, so I know the voltages are higher than the Rocket should be. The OT is out of a mono Knight amp tha ran 2x5881/GZ34 - not sure of the primary on it, I'll have to see if I can figure it out...

That OT is probably around 4k I'm guessing. Perfect voltage at 330v.

They work in an 18 Watt, but you need to change the PI resistors to make up the extra drive.

LarryLarry - See also the threads on the "octal Rocket" and the "KT66 Rockster".

As far as voltages being high, adjust your dropping string to get the correct voltages on the preamp and PI and you'll be golden.

Enjoy!
