Astroid 60 build

Post by passfan »

At the behest of some fine upstanding members I'm breaking the Astroid out of the previous thread which has come to be dominated by discussions about the 4-4-0. Shame on me for mixing them to begin with. I'm currently waiting for a VVR3 to go in this amp and have been told by Dana to heatsink it well or it won't last more than a month. The voice of experience right there.

I had a chance to do a quick clip so here it is. I usually like to set a mic back in the room to give a better idea of what you'd hear from a players perspective but this amp, in typical trainwreck fassion is unusually loud, and hard to do even that. The mic is an EV n/d 408b through an M/Audio interface and into pro tools sessions.
This being the second one of these I've built it is cleaner than the first and with all voltages nearly spot on I'd lean more toward the OT's being the difference. The first one had a "Drake" heyboer custom wind I believe it was that I traded someone off the board for. It got dirty when you cranked it which one must do if one wants his leads to sing with this amp. This build I used one RJ suggested which Edcor rates at 45 watts, yea right, and it just punches harder the louder you drive it. I love this amp through my EV tl806's and traded off my #124 for a Les Paul because of it. Attack was set to fast at 1/4 volume and everything else was at 12:00. Cabinet is a 4x12 crate with crate oem's. Guitar is Les Paul w/burst pro's / bridge pickup, volume at 8.

Really nice chime. Have you ever built a Concorde? That's another one on my list.

Not yet either. That's just a few different components and a CF right ? I'll post some better clips later.

Another clip...getting louder now. At 50% gain in fast mode...really starting to break a bit with some bloom, some feedback and a great bit of sustain. This clip is through my TL806 cabinets loaded with the evm12l. Amp set at 4 ohms. Sorry the clip cut short...it's time to defragment my hard drive.

Awesome Sounds and a nice amp. I like the way that feedback blooms in the 2nd clip.

I have mine about 1/4 of the way finished... now I am a bit more inspired. Did you build your own boards? I need a set of them.

Thanks for posting this thread up.

Thanks Guys. RJ with so much on your plate how do you manage ? I build my own boards as much as I can. The smaller relay and fet boards give me problems. I.m still getting use to the feel of the amp ; it is very demanding of precision playing in the fast mode. I guess I'll go back to practicing clean and dry again at low volumes. :)

Singin'! It's thick, but no mud. Hmm... I need to look at these things closer. I love the fatness.

It sounds cranky. Awesome!

I don't know why the wav files don't work for me so I can't comment on the sound. :)
