Build in progress

Post by Bob S »

Trying a different layout. Less wire.
A lot of the connections are not soldered yet - this is still work in progress.
I like the idea of point to point, but using a traditional pre-amp board seems more practical. This is my compromise.
Will have a VVR, parallel V1 & Presonance.
I'll post the results when I fire her up - next weekend hopefully.

Bob great looking split load cathode bias Liverpool. The whole design makes a lot of sense.

I've never seen this approach. Is there a name for it? Point-to-turret? Turret to point? TTT Tube-to-turret?
If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.

Just saw this thread. Looks great Bob! Going to be a high gain machine for sure! Nice hybrid layout. Do you think you might run into any phase issues with those output signal caps running perpendicular. You'll like the Presonance circuit.

The effects of the orientation of the caps is a concern - I wanted to try it this way first for the hell of it.
I'd like to play with the split load too when I get done.
I really want to get the noise floor as low as possible while keeping the high gain goodness the Liverpool delivers.
Stable, on the edge, low noise floor & repeatable without having to dink with each one.
Not asking for much

It will be if you ever need to pull the board :P

Are those green/grey wires the heater supply? You might want to twist them together & route them a bit further away from the main board...

Interesting approach. Is this a "gothic rink" type of layout? I was drawing one up for my own challenge/benefit for a different amp and ultimately stopped because basically being new I didn't know if it was worth the hassle to do the work of a layout like this not understanding at the time what leads affect what...and I still don't. Looking forward to your progress.

Never hold back.

Pickup the drill and start punching holes. New ways of building circuits is what makes amp building fun. :)

Yea but it was my first venture in my own layout and I didn't want a squealing pig on my hands. And in retrospect I think I did the right thing building something more conventional (the X10 clone with Solen fastcaps).

At the time, I guess I kept reading how lead dress was pivotal to good sounding amps (and it is) and maybe got scared, I just didn't feel like I knew enough then. Probably still don't. For the preamp I'm good. The power amp area, NFB lead issues, resonance/cut/presonance layout, etc I'm still not that sure about what leads are more sensitive.

Agreed - cool and innovative. I am always inspired by fresh ideas and a new look at things. Any hope you can bring toward taking some of the pain out of taming these beats will be well received.

Coming along nicely Bob.

That yellow board is pretty!

I'll be interested in what you think about the noise level with this build.

Keep us updated! :D
