Hearing Aids
I just got hearing aids last week, and I can only say that I should have done it 5 years earlier. I can now understand people when they talk without saying "Huh?" all the time. I can actually watch TV. And my guitars and amps all sound richer.
Of course, now small annoying sounds are louder as well. Things like taking a leak and papers rustling are suddenly very loud.
Part of me feels sheepish to be dependent on a device, but the other part of me feels like my quality of life has improved. And amps are cool, even if they are tiny enough to fit in your ear.
The bottom line is: Too much electric guitar, and you will have to get electric ears!
I'm surprised to not hear guitarists and amp builders talking about hearing aids more. Seems like they come with the territory.

Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.
Re: Hearing Aids
I bought mine in 2002. Spent six grand
. They've been in a drawer since 2007. My hearing is gettin' worse but I can't stand the feedback when I answer the phone. They'll stay in the drawer.

I bought a pair of shoes from a drug dealer the other day. I dunno what he laced them with but I’ve been tripping all day,
Re: Hearing Aids
most hearing aids have a small reed switch that changes the gain. they give you a tiny magnet to stick to phone speaker, and when you get your ear close it engages and there is no feedback.
try a small refridgerator magnat and see.

Re: Hearing Aids
I got mine 2 years ago. I only wear them when I have to go to business meetings and take notes.
I cannot stand to listen to my guitars/amps thru them. They digitally boost between about 1K5HZ and 4KHz or so but they have all this awful digital hash because they're designed for speech not music. Mine cost $4,000 but I know you can easily spend 6 to 8 depending on the nature of your hearing loss.

Re: Hearing Aids
The hearing aid has come a long way.
Unfortunately, it has a long way to go before they are perfected.
As an aside, I had a friend with terrible tinnitus.
He said it was like the ocean roaring in his ears and that sometimes it was so loud he had trouble hearing anything else.
He said there have been many people that have committed suicide due to severe tinnitus that drove them mad.
He went to a specialist and they custom built him two aids that generated a similar noise but out of phase with his tinnitus that canceled out 90% of the noise he was hearing.
He said he felt like he had a new lease on life.
His weren't the super small in ear ones, he wore the aids on the ear pieces of his glasses and had tiny tubes feed into his ears.
They were not very noticeable.
I think I remember him saying they cost $5K.

Hey Guys
I work for a hearing aid company and have helped design many differant types of aids.
If you guys are not happy with your HI's you should not leave them in the drawer. That $4000 to $8000 you pay for them is for the service the audiologist gives you. They make lots of money from an aid and you should keep going back till they work properly!
When you pick up the phone there is a reed switch that should be triggered when the phone reciever comes close to the HI. This should turn the HI to telecoil mode...this is a coil that picks up the electro magnetic feild from the phone reciever. If it does not work, you may need to place a magnet in the phone receiver so the reed switch gets triggered. If it still doesn't work take it back and get it fixed or tade up. There are some HI's out there that have feedback managers in them..they work.
If any one has any questions about HI's (hearing aids) just ask. I have been doing this for a long time and know quit a bit about the subgect. HI's have come a long way...from hand made descreate circuits...to having a tiny computer sitting in or behind your ear.

@ Dave
you can get HI's that have a music setting. Ask your audiologist about it.

Re: Hearing Aids
I've been either fortunate or smart, not sure which, but I have just very slight tinnitus that is so high in frequency that it's almost unnoticeable. About 5 years ago I started using in ears and it's really made a huge difference. I can monitor at very low levels and still feel the impact of my amp and the drums.
I also find that often, in fact most of the time, my amp actually sounds better at lower volumes, so low that my soundman is always telling me to turn UP because he can't get me loud enough in the mix without getting bleed from the drums.
I read that Jeff beck has the ocean like tinnitus and uses special in ears with the canceling in them. For awhile he couldn't play live because he couldn't hear what he was playing or the rest of the band.
Ain't technology great.
Now turn them amps down.

Re: Hearing Aids
Thanx for the tip Dano, I'll talk to them. Hopefully they can adjust mine so they will work OK on music as well as speech.
Re: Hearing Aids
I came across an old technology book in our library at work that gives the schematic for a vacuum tube amplifier hearing aid. How would you like to have that firecracker in your ear? So, any of you folks want to cobble up your own?
