Low volume and high voltages in preamp on 183
I am building #183 using Brandons Chassis, PT, OT and boards.
I am using 4 EL34's. Pins 1 and 8 are jumpered.
Since the chassis and ot are set up for it, I used an impedance switch.
When I first fired it up the PI trimmer started smoking. I re-checked all of my connections and everything was correct so I replaced the trimmer.
No more smoke.
I am getting bedroom level volume with the volume and master maxed.
This happens on both inputs.
I jumpered Pre out to Amp in. No change.
Rock/Jazz, Mid, Bright all function.
Tone controls all function.
PAB and OD function. Still low volume.
I ran the Pre out of 183 to the Amp in on my Bluesmaster. Same result. Very low volume.
I ran the Pre out on the Bluesmaster to the Amp in on 183. The output section functions fine.
I have tested and swapped tubes.
Any ideas as to what is wrong?

What are the heater voltages? For each tube.....

Can you post an image showing the board and the valve base wiring so we can take a better look?

You should measure the resistance of the 150k plate resistors.

Re: Low volume and high voltages in preamp on 183
Are those 1500k or 150k plate resistors on your v1a and v2a plates ? I think those should be 1503 and not 1500.

A marking of 1500 makes them 150 ohms, no?

Yep and so is the slopemartin manning wrote:A marking of 1500 makes them 150 ohms, no?

Hmmm, looks like you need to double check all your values and wiring.
It's a good idea to measure each and every component before installing it, even if you are experienced it's easy to make a mistake like installing a 150R resistor where it should be 150K.

Yep, I agree with the others - your V1-1 and V2-1 plate voltages are way high. That would suggest you've got 150 or 1500 ohms on those plates (not sure which the 1500 marking indicates). Your tone stack will not function with that low a value of slope resistor wither - most of your signal is just bleeding south.

Re: Low volume and high voltages in preamp on 183
You're right. Those are 150 ohm resistors. They should read 1503f.
I know I checked every connection on that board 5 times.
I guess I saw the 150 and just assumed the k was there.
I must have gotten a box of 150's instead of 150k.
Oh well, live and learn.
Thank you all.
