So it appears EJ is running this ODS clean with the Tube Driver for his Dirty Rythm tone (like he did for ACL with the SSS in 84', & 88' ).
The Tube Driver is used with the Echoplex below it, into the Marshal on top of the stack for his lead sound (as it has always been). The Dumble gets fed by a Fuzz Face, Tube Screamer and the 1500 delay.
It seems that he picked this amp up second hand, relatively recently. I love these early ODS amps. Tonally, they have more in common with his old SSS than the higher serial-number ODS models. Probably 6L6 based, as he seems to prefer that in the dirty rhythm spot in his rig.
Can anyone make out each of the controls on the front?
Yep, Nix got it right. The "dirty rhythm" rig is: Fuzzface--->TS808 (in a loop for true bypass)--->Toadworks Flanger (or MXR Flanger/Doubler in the past)--->MXR 1500 delay---->various 50w/100w Marshalls or the afformentioned Dumble. He runs the Echoplex and Tube Driver into the lead Marshall which is usually a '69 Superlead or late '60s Marshall of some vintage. Insane tone no matter what era you listen to IMO.

I've always wondered how Eric hasn't gotten his hands on some of the SSS variants out there today such as Brandon's HPD which is pretty much a dead-on clone of Eric's old amp! Lance Keltner is a buddy of EJ's and he's always singing the praises of Brandon's stuff, especially the Lindly ODS style amp he owns and the HPD. I'm sure Brandon could make him an amp that would capture that old SSS magic without the crushing 150w power rating. IDK just some late night ranting from a giant EJ fan....carry on with the normal programming....

Yep and the tube screamer gets that edge..
It is clean but it has some Grit'z.

Lets see if I remember those settings...
Ts 808 :
9 oclock on knob on left
3 oclock on center knob
11 oclock or so on right knob < too taste >

I have a keely Ts9+ killer pedal..
3 oclock or dimed knob on left
3-4 oclock on center knob
11-2 right knob.

at 2 oclock on the furthest right knob the clean side of these D style amps
or even the lead side GETS SUDDENLY ALOT LARGER TONEWISE.

Especially with Ev 12ls which is part of that KERRANG sound everyone is chasing myself included.

at 2 oclock the TS9+ kicks these circuits into SUPERMAN type tones.

I had the 150 watt version with kt88s for awhile and I was using the clean side mostly and pedals to achieve what I was after.

That said the lead side sounded like Zap straight in no pedals ..
150 watt/ kt88s ODS style amp.

I preferred el 34s more so as they were not as dark as the kt88s.
So I went for another amp same maker but el 34s.

At the time that kt88 amp was being made not much or as much was known about the SSS circuit as of yet.

More light has been shed on that thanks to this community for certain..

So the SSS is an attainable goal now and it seems he preferred the 100 watt preamps driving that SSS anyway to get faster breakup.

So perhaps 150 isnt needed either...
I think it can be had at 100 no pun intended.

I did note while standing in front of this rig on several occasions that he had
2 Ts 808s
2 tube drivers

the echoplex and tube driver and tube screamer were under the 1500mxr
on shelfs when I spied them.

The settings in my head for the TS8O8 I think were for lead marshall
keeping the tone more to the Cello side of voicing or Viola ...

The setting for the SSS amp might be set more bright
I had a pic of that somewhere and it seemed the
knob on left was at different location which might have been
2 oclock on left knob
2-3 middle knob
11-2 right.

That would allow more Grit out keeping the voicing more of an AHHH
then say OOOO vowel wise..

I know you can back the volume off a tube driver and kind of harness down an extremly loud amp ie 100 watt plexi or 150 watt sss.

He might have been using that tube driver to tame the brunt down some..
I also noted the settings on the tube driver were NOT the same as the one for his Lead Plexi.

Those settings were just barely cracked open on left knob both eq knobs in the center are off completely and the furthest knob on right just a smidge past 12.

When I traded Eric tube drivers for a week once I asked him to make marks where mine sounded the best with marker....

The tube driver I had for one week was the one he cut cliffs of Dover on...
He felt it was dying or going away and not sounding the same...

My thoughts were it sounded SPOT ON TO CLIFFS OF DOVER
and though my tube driver < second early version > was good
it was nothing like his lead one...

The insides were different on his as well...
and there were some things done to his which he did
to reduce hum and ground gremlins...
Erics cliffs tube driver is first version and it sounds just like cliffs of dover.
I told him he was crazy but if he wanted mine...........
His buddy talked him out of trading mine for it...

I had just traded heads with him as well super trem for super trem.

The settings on both the tube driver and the ts808s are different for the plexi then of the SSS or now his ODS.

Different voicing's...

Please note this was during the AVM era and even Tones era
the golden years I like to call them.

I have never heard more beautiful guitar sounds in my life both live or on recording and I still think his live shows surpass his recordings because one must be there to behold.

Spell bound from the first time I ever saw and heard that...
Just ruined me...

Because then the hunt was on and I had a clue or a glimpse as to what to chase ...

This was what I saw standing there at soundcheck after soundcheck or in the rehearsal place...

Did I look every time ?
you damn right like a Russian spy....

I must apologize to that man someday for bugging the hell out of him.
but how else would I learn ??

mission impossible

I believe out of respect for Mr Dumble is the reason he does not play clones...
In his mind nothing would be close anyway..

Now ive heard and played some clones that I think he might be quite happy with but I thought his cliffs pedal was still perfect and he did not.

I know he had the same SSS back after it had been repaired and most likely by
Dumbleman himself and it did not sound the same to Eric thus off it went to Carlos..

I am speculating but I think Ej refrains from doing that out of respect for DUMBLEMAN.

I am certain that is why the SSS went back to Mr Bruton as well.
To not offend D man.

by the way when I was at the rehearsal place I asked what is a manzamp
cause I was staring right at it on his rack where the SSS was sitting under it.

I thought what an odd name...

Eric said thats because its a ma ma ma ma mmmmm MANZAMP !
Son

Then I knew why it was called that...
We both had a nice chuckle...

No doubt it was

The manzamp I saw was in a head form though sitting up on a rack
not a combo.... just a head with manzamp stenciled across the black tolex in
white...

There was no combo or speaker it was a head...
again this has been 20 years or more..

Eric was right down the hall from Srvs rehearsal room behind
the Opra house they had many rehearsal rooms there...

When Eric moved to the largest one I rented his old place..
That was Van Wilks room and Ej and Van split that place..
