3rd gen 50W OT choice

Post by telentubes »

The OT is the last component I need for my 3rd gen. 50W.
I'm thinking I will use either the Prosonic or possibly the Allen TO40MT.

I know some folks have had good results with the Prosonic from Angela.

Has anyone tried the Allen TO40MT for a 50W ODS? It's rated around 40W. The primary and secondary numbers look good. I've used Allen PTs and OTs on Fender style builds, and liked them a lot, but this will be my first D style amp (I've scratch build about 10 others in the past 2 years) and I want to use the proper components.

Here are some specs and pics

Hi telentubes, I don't know if this tranny is period correct for your 3rd gen, but what I have gathered from the forum is that the Silverface Bassman OT is the one to use for a 50 Watter.

Here is the link for the Classictone OT, a few people here like them (I have not tried them), cheaper than the Allen + 10 more watts for headroom:

Hope this helps.

alvarezh,
Thanks for the link. I've used MC iron on other builds but wanted to try something different for the Dumble style. The MC iron hasn't been my favorite of all I've used so far (Mercury, Heyboer, Allen, Edcor, Hammond, MC). They just didn't seem to be as robust as the others, with lighter leads, and they run kinda hot for my taste. I know lots of folks love them though. Sure are a good deal. If no one seems to like these other choices I mentioned, I'll start looking for Bassman OTs again, as you suggested.

TT, I'm not particularly fond of the MCI power transformers either, but I've used their M6 lamination Bassman and Twin output transformers before. I wouldn't hestitate to use one for your application either. Matter of fact, I picked up one(see link) to use when I was originally going to build a 50W 2nd Gen version. One day I would like to do another quad 6V6 build and I plan on using one of these. Nevertheless, there's lot's of good stuff around, just pick your price point.

You seem to have gone through most major manufacturers. Again, I have no experience with these but, Pacific Transformers (somewhat expensive) are another option.

On the Prosonic at Angela, I can tell you that I bough their Twin Reverb multi-tap (part# 026478) to replace my original one on my Twin (just wanted the multi-tap feature), it's stamped (not just labeled) as a Fender original part and it sounds nice. Of course the amp is running most of it's original tubes including a quad of cherished RCA black plates, which most likely will end up on my D clone one of these days.

BTW, I am running Mercurys on my 50 Watter, but it's a skyliner in low/high plates configuration and Black Face P.I., with some (actually, quite a few) values changed to suit my tastes. So, they may not properly suit the 3rd Gen sound, a Fender original should be the right thing to use, I guess. In the end it's what you're after that really matters.

Red Plate amps are built exclusively with MMs so, you can easily judge how they sound on a D style amp here:

alvarezh, Lots of good information and leads in your last post. Thanks for that. I had forgotten about Pacific Transformers, which I really like. I had two amps built for me, before I got the building bug myself, and they both have Pacifics, and are great sounding amps. They look really well built. I've been resisting the Mercurys because of the cost (and maybe the hype), but in the long run, that's not a big a deal if the tone is there. I'll check out the Red Plates.
ToneMerc, I'll have another look at the MCs as well.

Hi,

You might also want to check out http://www.edcorusa.com/category/67-cxppseries.aspx The company isn't making the usual suspects (copies of OEM Xformers), but they remind of Hammond's classic design and are made in the US (important for me as the USD to CAD has made Hammonds more expensive) and the price is right. The Iron uses M6 in the laminations, lots of other neat features.

Best REgards,

Steve
