Magnetic Components

Post by godi »

An other vote for Magnetic Components, they make super sounding transformers at reasonnable price, In my opinion, Mercury Magnetic is a rip off, I'm not saying that they are bad, but to expensive. I've build two JTM45, two Tweed Deluxe and a Princeton Reverb with great succes using Magnetic components Tx.

I bought a set of Trainwreck transformer today from Triode Electronic, first day of sale. No affiliation here, just satisfaction.

The Triode PT looks like a good copy of a Heyboer but higher price then what rjguitar or Allenmey offer.

The OT looks whimpy compared to a Heyboer or Pacific 6K6 OT normal used for the Express. Reminds me of a AC30 type but at 6K6 primary.

Jean - Hm, quite a site you have there actually. And it would seem you are quite prolific in many areas. Very very impressive.

BTW, the Terry Tube Sargent story you told, I certainly understand your thinking, and feelings, too. I had an issue with him once, about whether he actually sent some tubes I had purchased - they never arrived after almost 3 weeks. He got pretty pissy with me but finally said he would send more tubes - even though, he said, he thought I was trying to rip him off! I told him, hey, if an extra set of tubes show up, I will either send you more $$ or send them back, I wasn't trying to get some free tubes.

Well, to finish up the story, he did email me a day later and said the tubes showed up back at this place, so he would send them again. ???And eventually they arrived. And they were quality tubes, what I had ordered. He never said he was sorry for accusing me of trying to rip him off, eh, but whatever, I'll live. No, I never purchased from him again.

OK, but all of this said - and also that I agree with you - that your request was spelled out very well - I think the preamp tubes he sent you were better than what you asked for. Yeah, I do. And BTW, where two of those tubes look very USA, there is a Yugo tube that predates the Ei versions that you seemed to want - and they, the earlier ones, are better tubes, one that Ken actually liked. They were sold by GT for quite awhile, too, before they ran out, so you see them occasionally with the GT label on them. How you can identify them is by a series of etched, ala Mullard style, numbers and letters about a 1/4" above the tube bottom - two groups of maybe 3-4 small gold/silver letters, one on top of the other. In fact, that last tube looks like it might be one but I can't see the other side of it to confirm. The top seam is indicative of the Euro tube for that matter, so this could even be an Amperex tube - much better quality than the Ei tube you were looking for.

Eh, oh well, so I'm just saying that - and this is not a huge 'Go Team Tube Sargent!' moment, but even for all the shite Terry put me through - and I will never buy from him again - he still sent me some good tubes. How did they sound? That's finally where you have to go I think.

As to the purchase of the MG iron I say, 'Go Team Jean!' This product looks good to me and I know it will perform well. RJ and Allyn sell the PC goods, absolutely, but it's certainly nice to have the MC stuff around I think. ...Oh, BTW, I like where you used a wood component board in one of your amps! Nice!
Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?
