Used JJs in the early days, switched to Winged C' but the price is nuts and now use TungSol RI from New sensor. In general I prefer the tone of the TS's over the WC's. A bit clearer in all the right places. The only negative I have found is that the glass envelope is thinner than other tubes.

Here's what TheTubeStore.com says about them:
"There are some important things to know about the reissue Tungsol 5881 tube before you decide to use it. The Tungsol 5881 is a 23 watt tube and is rated for a maximum plate voltage of 400Vdc. The many amplifiers that have higher plate voltage but use a tube rectifier can use the Tungsol 5881 tubes without issue. A prime example is the ’59 Bassman LTD. However it is also critical to rebias the amp heeding the 5881’s 23W rating. This will provide a vintage tone and less clean headroom. Leaving the bias set to a 6L6GC setting and/or using the Tungsol 5881 in a high voltage amp with a solid-state rectifier, will likely cause problems and are not covered by warranty. For these cases consider the Tung-sol 6L6GC-STR tubes instead. They are rated for 30 watts and 500V so they will hold up better. Their tone is quite similar to the 5881 too."

hmmmmmm

Gary - Does NS do matching? I didn't see the option to order a matched pair or quad on their site.

They offer what they call platinum matching for about $1.00 extra per tube (at least on the wholesale side of their business). You specify if you want matched pairs or quads.

Brian, I jest... I was touting 5881 types in general as having the toothier tone that leadfootdriver was referring to. No personal experience here with the Tung Sols. Much experience with cheap Sovtek, Sovtek WXT, and cheapo Chinese Sino's. Not as harmonically pleasing as many 6L6 tubes, but when cranking the amp the breakup is decidedly more rocked out. Perhaps I live dangerously - a rawk attribute.... I figure I can always log in if I blow somethin' up......

The TS RI 5881s are pretty stout, I have a set in a SOD II and Overdrive Deluxe that have been in their over a years at 440+ volts and they are still going strong.

FWIW, they also sound spectular in a single ended class A design that I have fooling around with on and off.
