Gosh, Scott, where to start! As far as I could tell, a good time was had by all who attended. I'd brought a total of 11 speakers in addition to the ones already in my cabs. Jensen Neo and Tornado, Sugarcone, EVM-12L, Scumnico, and Jim Seavall's contributions: M75-, J75- and H75-LDHC) for people to try out in their cabinets.

The venue couldn't have been better-a stage in a large hall with good acoustics, so that you could really crank the amps and get a feel for what they're capable of without odd room effects and bleeding ears. The afternoon was filled with such a wide variety of amps and cabinets and speakers and tones and tales and beer, weatherwomen cooing and wishing they weren't in a church so they could...

...oh, I can't lie. It's pretty embarrassing. I was underwhelmed. Total attendance: 3. Myself, Mark (pullshocks) and a fellow new to this community named Jeff, who is considering building a D-style amp. Jeff also brought his son...so I suppose attendance really was 4 (an increase of 33%!). Apparently, inhabitants of the Pacific Northwest face an appalling array of illnesses, injuries, and family emergencies during February and March. Heck, I was actually pretty well doped up myself on hydrocodone and Flexeril, since I was in a bad traffic accident a week ago and have neck/back problems from it. (I took half doses so I could drive safely and have a coherent sense of hearing.) But Mark drove in all the way from Seattle, and I'm not sure where Jeff came from. It was great to meet both of them.

Anyway, Mark brought the only other amp besides mine, which was a labor-intensive project pushing 7581 tubes based on the Hybrid A circuit, IIRC. He had made his own chassis, along with a beautiful walnut-veneer combo cabinet. His guitar was also made by him, and very impressive. His amp had the HRM stack on the outside, and bypassable, but some things on his amp didn't seem to be working quite right. Hopefully he'll chime in here. It was also the first time he'd had the amp in such a large space, where he could hear it really open up.

His combo had a reconed 30W G12M in it, and sounded pretty good, but quite thin to my ears. We tried his amp through both of my cabs. One is a Bob Burt V-12 with a Scumnico and an M75-LDHC, and the other is a Forte vertical 3D that has a G12-65 and an EVM-12S in it. Very different sounding cabs, but both great. Both cabs added a great deal of body to the sound. True, a 2x12 will sound beefier than a 1x12, but even so it was clear to me that the single G12M wasn't helping his cause.

So we ended up trying out some different speakers in his combo, including a Scumnico and an Scumback H75-LDHC. The latter really seemed to compliment the amp well, bringing in a lot more body to it while not having too much in the upper mids. I wanted to put an EVM in it, but the mounting screws he had were too short for the cast frame.

My amp is a heavily modified D'Lite. Twin OPT, low plate classic, running KT-90s at 520V. It's kind of a tweaker's paradise, with external controls for adjusting the GNFB, V1 NFB, PI trimmer, and several other nonconventional controls. What I'd really hoped is to have a chance to directly compare it with a 4-tube 100W amp, but none showed up. Anyway, to my ear, my amp sounded pretty darn good. It better, considering the work I've put into it.

I was hoping to have a report of comparisons between Bluesmasters and ODS amps, between 2-holers and 4-holers, between high- and low-plate amps, and to finally have a chance to have the veil lifted from my ears on how to find the mystical sweet spot for the PI trimmer. But, alas, 'twas not to be.

One thing that the throng of attendees were reminded of was how much help we've gotten from this community. I sure would have liked to have met more of you. [/img]

Man I am so sorry I couldn't make it.
Too bad the turn out wasn't better.
You never know with these things, how many will turn out.

On top of my chronic fatigue from my heart problems I threw my back out a few days ago so I was doped up as well on pain killers and in no shape to drive.

I really wanted to check out that Forte cabinet. Those have really peaked my interest.
Sounds like the best of both worlds of a sealed cab and open back.
The problem is finding a 2x12 that is wide enough to stand on end to set a head on top.

I thought Shad was coming? That was one of the reasons I wanted to come to hear a pro built clone to compare my amp to.

I see the room has hardwood floors. Is it a pretty lively room?

Oh well, maybe next time.
Right now my head is spinning from taking MS Contin.....

Got any close ups of the Forte cab?
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!

It's really too bad that things went down the way it did.

I went throught the same thing with the Minneapolis/St. Paul Dumble fest.

The morning of the event I woke up too sore with my arthritis and bad back to travel the 250 miles to the cities. But they had a lot more in attendance.

Thanks for the report.

Yes. But you have to come here to see them. And it. And you have to bring your amps.

Resentfully yours,

George

PS - I seriously hope you're feeling better soon, Tom.

PPS - I'll try to get some pics and a review of the cabinet soon. Short version is that I like it a lot. But I'd like to compare it to one of the Glaswerks 2x12 cabs or similar. Here's a shot of it with the back open, showing the way I did the Jay Mitchell doughnut thing variation to try to tame the beaminess. Lots less muffling than the standard design, and I think the dispersion is really good now.

Man, I wish I could have been there, but Denmark/Scandinavia/Europe is maybe a little too offskirts to drop by.

Maybe we should do an event in Europe??

The Forte cabinet was it as far as I am concerned.

Minor corrections on my amp, the output tubes are7591, not 7581, and the speaker was a G12H-30, not G12M. Either way, hearing the amp with multiple other speakers, it is not the best choice. What a great opportunity to audition so many. After hearing George's cabs both with non-matching 12's, maybe I will try a 2x10" baffle in there

Dumble fest really paid off for me

As Greiswig said, hearing the 2 amps side by side, something was definitely not quite right with mine. An overly bright, annoying top end.

After I got home I did some checking I found that I had mis-wired the bright switch and the value of the bright cap was up in the 300s, way over spec

You might ask how anybody could mis-wire something as simple as a bright switch.....but I did. Must have been a late night because I wired it to short across the cap instead of disconnecting. So basically I had no "normal". In one switch position it was bright (with the too-high value bright cap), and the other position shorted across terminal 1 and 2 of the volume control, giving a sort of volume boost .

Snipped the bad wiring tonight, and it sounds waay better. The harshness is gone, and the effect of the treble control is more noticeable. Seemingly the treble control had been overpowered by bright signal through the high value bright cap

Pullshocks,

Glad to hear that the get-together helped. That's really what I was hoping for, and hoping to gain for myself, too. I think this kind of meetup could be really valuable for all participants that way, even seasoned builders, because there is always something new to learn. I was eager to run some of the circuit changes I've made (like the "hair" control on the OD channel) past some experienced ears.

To breathe life into an old thread..

If there ever is another Portland or NW Amp Show, get together or IDK .. Jamboree..... I will be there.

So count me in to add a few percentage points to the total and I will fill a minivan full of amps, cabinets, propane and propane accessories.

I may go a little overboard...

Chops
Heavens, an unused PI input !
