20 K today???Bob-I wrote:Not likely that this is even close to accurate. 7 years ago they were going for $1500 or so, today $20K. The likelyhood that this will continue is tiny, in fact I believe they will go down in value in a few years when the market is flooded with Fuchs/2Rock etc.makrisp wrote:......they about double every 5 years.....
Nice amp, but it's not an investment. JMO
As in, 20 thousand single dollar bills?
Wow. I am sincerely shocked. I paid $100 or so for a 1960's point-to-point Bogen tube amp with NOS tubes. The amp has ZERO problems (no hiss, buzzing, scratching) and it has all the luscious FAT vintage mojo a human being could ask for from a tube amp (think Hendrix, '70s Didier Thibault tone) so I'm wondering why people would pay such a price?
I am just wondering why people value these amps so much? Holy crap, even vintage Neve 1073 mic pres (just about the best mic pres in the world) go for about $5000 a piece. How could people pay 20k for this dumble overdrive special?
Even, if like bob is saying, the amp goes down in price through the years (maybe to $10,000?) isn't this still ridiculous? This to me just seems like those childish adults who paid thousands of dollars for tickle me elmos ...hype all because of a stupid label.
I am in no way targeting the dumble amp. But the greatest tones in the world - Hendrix - came from cheap tube amps (relatively cheap). Now I guess people are paying 10s of thousands of dollars for these great amps and I'm wondering, why haven't I heard an amazing David Gilmour-like tone yet from anyone?

Mostly though, it's what one finds their tone to be. I don't know if Dogears would think my Bogen was so bitchen with his articulate and well refined judgement. My ears have long since passed their "golden" moments and I think I am delighted by more pedestrian amplification when the whole package [guitar, amp, speaks] is gloriously pumping. Those moments usually cause me to abandon my critical state for the "inspired" musician part of me. Although now I have alotta issues with the speaks being produced. As they get more R&D devoted to them, it's a small few that will work with certain amp and cab combinations I use. Older Jensens consistantly sound "right" in any 6L6 or 6V6 based amp. But they'll soon all be re-cones if not pooped out old speaks.[50's & 60's period Jensens of course] They sellection of "right" pre-Rolas have dwindled to that area above nada. Oh yeah, I'm waiting on a pair of Tone Tubby hempcones speciffically for my 6G6-A Bassman. There aren't any I can test at the local music emporiums, to their fault. I'll let folks know what my impressions are.
