PIO cap useage in SFPR recap

Post by mike9 »

I got some .1uF/600v Russian PIO caps in the mail today. I was going to use some in my SFPR recap. I was thinking of using them in the preamp section and considered using a pair of matched ones in the PI, but then thought they might be too HiFi sounding. Any thoughts?

PIO caps in SFPR

I've used the Russian PIO caps to couple the Pi to the power tubes on my Pro Reverb and used PIO's in my PRII amp and can find no negatives with using these caps; go for it!

they are nice sounding caps.

make sure you test them, a lot of the NOS russian caps are out of spec and/or leak.

I've used them in several fender circuits with possitive results. The ones i used had a metal case, I used a heat gun and shrunk a piece of clear heat shrink, so I could still read the value, over the case to prevent any possible shorting.

if you have have any concerns about tone you could always use alligator clips and test drive them before you solder in. BECAREFUL not to touch them while the amp is on or before you make the amp safe to work on!

The K40Y-9 caps are pretty great. Ive used them in a bunch of fender and marshall builds, and in my guitars too, i cant say whether they will sound the same as what was in your Princeton, but they do sound great.
Ive not yet tried any of the other Russky types, but want to.

Wow - been a busy couple of weeks getting ready for the new semester, but thanks for the opinions. I have the K42 green's and the K40 silver PIO caps as well as some glass encased ones in the .025uF range, Ought to be fun trying them out. 8)

I use PIO caps in every build. They never sound "too hifi" IMO, I think they sound very smooth and are probably the most transparent caps I've found (I use polystyrene for small values, again very transparent). With PIO caps and a good EQ, I find that I can knock out any harshness and get a nice smooth overdriven/distorted tone.
