Need transformer help..

Post by Icetech »

ok, so i decided my next donor amp would be a ampeg 2x12 reverberocket reissue i bought bout 8 years ago.. why do these damn things sound good in the stores.. anyway.. have hated it since i got it home..

Started gutting it tonight, and notice the power transformer has no labeling.. and the wires are all into molex connecters:( a problem for a guy that is used to using fenders as donors.. as i have no idea what wire is what on the PT now.. was hoping someone might be able to help me out.. or point me in the direction of a schematic of these amps.. below is a pic of the transformer and wires out of it..

Didnt realize how little i know bout PT's til it struck me i didnt... i have always modified existing power sections:)

Thanks guys..

ok.. and of course 5 mins after posting this, i found the schematic...

which is here http://www.schematicheaven.com/ampegamp ... ket_ri.pdf

If anyone is bored and would like to double check my figuring..

On the 110v side.. just use the black and white, cap off the blue and brown..

on the output side.. the red-green-red 3 wire output is my heaters..

the middle connector, i have no idea since it puts out 15 and 12 volt.. assuming this was being used for the 12v relays in the amp.. can i just cap these?

And the 2 wire red output is my high(ish) voltage utput...

anyone know whats up with the middle orange/yellow/orange wires from that schem?

BTW.. thanks a ton guys:)

Bear in mind you will have to replicate the existing P/S for the high voltage since this is a non center tap transformer. It's OK to just heat shrink the taps you have no use for although if you want relay power one of the low voltage taps with a grounded center tap would be a good source for relay power. Personally I'd use the 3 middle taps like this: Ground one of the outside taps and make a bias supply btween that and the other outside tap. Then use the center tap to ground for a relay power supply. Look at the RD-50 layout in the Dumble files section where I'm currently doing this with a Music Man that has a similiar transformer setup.

Thanks heis, i prefer just switches on the faceplate and no relays:) So that should work out fine... I just wanted to verify before i let out the magic smoke..

Would prefer more voltage.. but im sure i can make something with 390... worse comes to worse i will buy a PT... hate to spend money when i have working parts though:)

390V seems to be more in the Plexi/TW area but on the other hand my modded Deluxe Reverb II only has 420V on the plates. Yet it sounds great.
