Best Audio Sample of a Dumble or Trainwreck? educate me...

Post by daydreamer »

So, I've been hanging around the Garage a few weeks and reading all the posts, standing on tip-toes to see whats on the bench...

I've never seen or heard either of these amps types (Dumble or Trainwreck) in real life; so my question is this; what's the best examples (you tube, songs, or otherwise) of why these amps are so important to you guys?

I'm a pretty simple creature, don't give a shit what brand my T shirt is, and I don't aspire to drive a Ferrari (it's just a car, all I need it four wheels and a stereo!); give me your best examples of why I should want to have a Dumble or Trainwreck?... :D

Convert me

While that Peter Lerche video is very nice, the overdrive on that amp is bit more brittle than some clips I've heard.
Very subjective I know and I like his amp a lot but personally I like a little smoother overdrive.
It may be as simple as where the internal OD trimmer is set or where his guitar volume is set or even his pickups in his guitar.
A lot of things affect tone.

He is also using PAB + OD, so maybe that is where the extra grind is coming from.

As far as Dumbles go, a lot of D cloners are going for the "grail tone" of Robben Ford and LaryCarlton. The most notable pop/rock recording of an ODS ( Dumble Overdrive Special ) is probably the David Lindley solo in Jackson Browne's "Running On Empty". The Dumble Discussion is a fascinating read, I reccommend going to the begining : https://tubeamparchive.com/viewforum.ph ... start=3450
and read he first 20 or 30 pages or so ( or the whole thing ! ) a few times and you will really will get a feel for what these amps are about and for the depth of knowledge about the Dumble ODSs and amp building in general that is displayed there.

I say that because coming in to the discussion where it is now can be very confusing if you don't know all the lingo, abbreviations, and circuit variations that are bantered about.

Got to say, I was a bit skeptical that I would be impressed, but now I've seen an amp produce that amount of harmonic content on its own is really very cool. i alway thought there was a lot of processing involved with that smooth type of drive, but those amps are really doing it all alone!!

Started doing what KT66 suggested, and had to laugh as there are early posts asking sort of the same thing, "what's the deal here?" Plenty to learn though, did anyone crack the egg on the SSS? Those local feedback loops sound interesting.

anyway, thanks for humoring me....

From a drummer prospective I like this one black wrap DW Collectors looks and sounds like my set.
The #102 Dumble ODS sounds great also.

I've met Toss Panos a few times....what a hoot. Good drummer. If you're familiar with My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you shouldn't be surprised that his oldest first cousin is also named Toss Panos.

OK. I'll come clean. I have an Octal Plus Liverpool that Kenny built for me. It does just about anything I could want as far as tone goes. I didn't ask for it to be built that way. I just played his amps at his house, basically went slackjawed and asked him "how is this even possible?"

Anyway, have a listen and see what you think.

You can't just throw things like this out there and leave it hanging...!

Come on then, tell us more. Octal preamp, EL84 outputs? Or a Liverpool but using octal outputs (6V6es)? Or something different?

I can't comment on how it sounds yet because the crappy little speaker in my laptop that I'm using right now doesn't do justice to anything, but the playing is smooth.

It's the basic Liverpool, but it's got 2 V2 sockets in parallel. I can put in a 6SL7 or a 12ax7 in V2 for a different sound (but not both!) He was very clear on that! Since I first tried it, I left the octal tube in. It just has more character. Kenny gave me a few different tubes. There's one Chinese one that is kinda noisy, but the overtones are nuts.

He gave me some GE 5751 tubes. I put them in V1 and V3. They make the amp cleaner and more bluesy. Once I got that combination, I really never changed it.

My recording setup is now real easy to use and get a decent sound out of. So if there are any demo requests, let me know. I may give that weird octal tube a try tomorrow morning.
