Ya'll need to try a Fane Studio 12L. No fizz. Bigger, more articulate low end.

Hi guys, I would like to add a few comments to how the experiments, described in posts above, ended.

Guess an inductor coil is usefull for tweaking the top end of 'hard' speaker units like e.g. the EV12L like you do in hifi speakers anyway. It won't alter you sound in a bad way, nor does it make the speaker slow or less sensitive.

However, I arrived at the conclusion, that although it reduced the ice pick top end, the speaker unit is still hard sounding and my test were done in my private rehearsal room and not playing live or with my band mates.

Consequently, the coil has been removed and instead I use 'softer' speakers for bedroom level playing. I use a cab (1x12 and 2x12) loaded with Celestion 12g65s. They sound nice and forgiving at bedroom levels and not as 'forward' as the EV12L.

Being mainly a strat and tele player, I guess the EV12L thiele cab should be saved, not for a reainy day, but for live Jobs with higher sound pressure levels, that make the EV12L behave a little more 'soft' or where the forwardness is an asset - and isn't that what the EV12L was aimed for anyway.

Just my two cents

Thanx Bob. I did some research and it came up 1/8" foam, looks just like weatherstripping, I'll use that.

This is my first EV12L, I have Altecs and JBLs so I'm used to the aluminum domes.

Update: Got it done with closed cell foam, and put my 100W #124 on it.

Now this amp still awaits a 'scope check out to find the parasitic(s) causing fizzy highs in OD mode, but this speaker does seem to have a little fizz of its own as it can do that in clean mode too even if you're not pushing it hard, which I had not experienced before with either Altec 417Bs or JBLE130s.

Dartanion, where can I get the Fane Studio 12L? Internet doesn't show any US or Canada sources.

I did change the preamp and PI tubes, now running Mazda 12AX7S in V1, Amperex 7025 in V2, and GE long plate in the PI. Also the pilot light blew out when I switched on the AC, have to check that out too, must need a bigger dropping resistor.

David, FWIW, I use this gasket material from Part Express, but what you have will work just as well.

I agree, Scottie (Boogafunk) does build excellent TL cabs among others. 8)

EV made OEM versions of the 12" EVM with aluminum domes during the '70s and '80s for Fender.
Some were labeled as "EVM12F" and used in (for example) the Fender 75.
Others were labeled with the standard "Fender Special Design" blue sticker and used in EV optioned Twin Reverbs.
I've seen other OEMs that likely were used in Kustom amps.
I don't think there was ever any retail versions with the metal domes, though.

If you like the EV speakers but want a slightly tamer high end, you might try either an EVM-12S or even better, an SRO. By SRO I mean the original white coffee can Alnico SRO12 not the transistion SRO12L which is really an EVM. There's also the Force12 which is constructed with the same cone, frame and dome as the 12S, but smaller magnet and roundwire voicecoil.

I've used all of them but the SRO12 is by far my signature tone.
