US-plug question

Post by Tdale »

A bit off-topic, but I hope someone will aswer.

I got a laptop from a relative of mine in the US. The transformer is 110-230V so I can use it here in Norway. The problem is the plug, since we have different plugs and sockets here.

I got an US-European plug adapter today, so I should be ok. The problem is that the adapter only accepts US plugs withouth a ground plug (only the two flat plugs).

What should I do? Electric equipment doesn't always have a grounded plug, due to a different electical system here. Can I just remove the ground pin and plug it in, or will it not work at all without the ground plug?

There are adapters here in the states that allow you to plug a 3 prong device into a 2 prong outlet. The generally have either a wire or a metal lug that is meant to be attached to the center screw on the wall plate. If you got one of these adapters, you could just remove or ignore that wire (or lug).

No issues for a laptop supply. It will work fine.

On a laptop, I would say that it is not. But the whole point of using such an adapter is to leave your original power supply cord in tact. Then, if it doesn't work for some VERY unexpected reason when using the adapter, you just unplug the adapter, and no harm has been done.

But I would be very very surprised if this adapter prevented the laptop from working. Many of the laptop power supplies I have had through the years have only had a 2 prong plug at the end of the cable in the first place.

ok.. I guess I could just cut the wire, and mount a norwegian plug in stead...and just forget the adapter..
