Can a fender hot rod be mAde it to two rock

Post by paisley_tele »

I can get a cheap fender hot rod deluxe. But can I modded in to a two rock classes clean. I would plan on taking out the circuit boars along with the pot but the trans should be good enuff to power the new amp right ?

How do you plan on doing the conversion?
You don't sound like you have much electronic experience?
Remember that tube amps have very high lethal voltages inside so it may not be a good idea if you are a novice to attempt this.

You would be time and money ahead to do a build from scratch.
the transformers are a issue the 2 brown leads are the bias supply on the power transformer. have you ever heard a fender blues deluxe, or hot rod deluxe that sounded good ? I don't think so. the transformers are a big part of the sound. I think you would be shooting your self in the foot.

67Plexi, funny you mention that - my friend had a hot-rod deluxe that we thought for sure was broken. I took it home and did a basic checkout, voltages, bias, swapped tubes, tried with different speakers - absolutely the worst sounding amp I have ever heard. Didn't find anything "wrong" with it, turns out that tone is a feature... who in their right mind would design such a thing?
Don't waste your time with anything from that amp.

That Deluxe chassis would be good to make into a Dumble type amp but the PT/OT is on the weak side unless your going to make a low watt tweed ODS or something like that. The iron would work fine for two 6V6 build.

take all the guts out, including transformers, speaker, tubes. Then sell all that stuff on ebay. Use that money and maybe you can buy new tubes and trasformers. Then it will be like a scratch build, I am sure you are going to have a lot of fun with it, I do like the way those combo amps look.
Good luck

That's a subjective remark if I've ever heard one. I'm pretty sure they don't "suck".

They dont "suck" but they certainly arent the best. But seem to be the most popular. IMO 99% of the builders on this forum have better sounding amps than two rocks so i'd take their advice.

To the OP: If you buy/build a two rock and play john mayer's "slow dancing in a burning room" even just once I will personally come over and set that amp afire.

Only kidding of course :P
It's true i've lost my marbles and i cant remember where i put them

I say why not? The transformers will work just fine. However I would get a new speaker as the stock ones in the HRD suck bad.
I would build a D'Lite rather than the two rock though. The tube configuration is perfect and the voltages would be right as well. The OT is really not that bad,but I did put a Hammond 1650H OT in an HRD once and the tone improved dramatically,so all bets are off on the OT.

The basic IDEA of the HRD is pretty sound. It's just the parts they use are bottom self items. The amp would be spectacular with top quality parts in it.But....then it would cost a lot more, and the price is what makes them attractive to the masses.
Crystal latice or vacuum, that is the question.

The last time I played a HRD, it was a noisey bugger. Kind of reminded me of an early Mesa Boogie Mark I noise level.

hi there,

please allow me to chime in here, as this is my first post on this forum.

I have owned and played not a hot rod, but a Blues Deluxe over many years before tearing it apart because it was beyond service. In my opinion, the transformers are pretty good, albeit a bit undersized. That being said, I've successfully built a very nice, very big sounding and VERY loud 8) D'Lite-ish amp out of the Blues Deluxe's iron. If I'm correct, the transformers of the Hot Rods aren't that much different from the ones in the Blues series. The Chassis offers plenty of room too, so I'd say go for it. It just won't be a conversion, but rather a build from scratch.

btw. the two biggest problems with the Blues and Hot Rods (apart from the constantly breaking PCB-jacks) are the crappy speaker and the very cold bias. Both can be solved easily, after which the amp will sound pretty good.

Search OmegaAmps and check out the clips on their web page. Jim get's some nice sounds out of these amps without starting from scratch. I assume that you already have one.
