5E3 mod to 'loosen' up d'lite cleans
Hello hello!
I'm currently rocking a stock a d'lite 44 with verb, and while I'm in love with it, I wish I could make the cleans a little more forgiving. To my ears, the clean channel sounds very 'tight' and precise, quite unlike the loose, spanky tones I got out of my old DRRI. Running my echoplex before the input helps soften up the sound quite a bit, but I wish I could achieve a similar sound without the use of huge out board effects unit.
I've been looking into doing a 5EC input mod. Would y'all say this would help me achieve what I'm going for?
Lastly, I'm concerned about tainting the sweet OD tones I'm currently getting.
Apologies for the overuse of geeky tone vocab.

You might try taking the local negative feedback on V1b out, although I believe the OD will likely suffer some with out it.
What is the 5EC mod?

I believe he is referring to the Fender Tweed 5EC.

Pardon my ignorance, what's a 5eC? And...what's the "5eC input mod"?
Killing the local negative feedback on V1B does loosen up the clean - but will also loosen up the OD. You could always add a relay that switches the LNF on and off when you switch from clean to overdrive.

I'm a fool.
5E3***

I can't seem to dig up any literature but if I remember correctly it's a mod that adds a fender-esque character to the amp.
Apologies for my own ignorance on the subject.

but you should also go with low-plates (100k/1k5) to steer into blackface direction...

10thtx-
Great, thanks so much!
Teo-
I've considered going with blackface values but I'm worried lowering the plates too much will detract from the dumbly overdriven tones.

Can you change the title of the thread to reflect that it is about the 5E3 and not a 5EC?james21789 wrote:I'm a fool.

I cathode bias many of my D style builds and don't use the local feedback in those amps.It makes them nice and loose. The OD is really nice to my ears.
I recently built a 4 bottle 6CA7 cathode biased D style amp and the cleans are spectacular. The OD is pretty loose and does controlled feedback really nicely.
I'm a big fan of cathode biasing these amps.It loosens them up quite a bit.I use mostly NOS tubes however, and I pump the current to them.
That might kill some new production tubes.
I like a fixed bias amp too,but the cathode biased ones are pretty killer for blues based clean tones.
Last night at a local jam,two of my amps were on stage. One was the 4-6CA7 combo and the other was a 50 watt,2-6CA7 head on top of a 4-12 marhsall cab.The 4 bottle unit was spectacular with pushed cleans and the 50 watter was killer distorted.
I played my modded Vibrolux(fender til the end!)with my 72 Deluxe Tele.
I must admit that the 4 bottle amp ruled the roost last night.Fat,fat, fat was the order of the day.Killer leads for 'the thrill is gone'.The owner used a Tom Anderson Cobra.Wow! What a nice guitar!

I believe Henry's Tweedyverb has a tweed pre. He mentions it in this thread:

Done. Thanks Tom.Can you change the title of the thread to reflect that it is about the 5E3 and not a 5EC?
simply incredible. I'm constantly dumbfounded by the amount of information on this site.I believe Henry's Tweedyverb has a tweed pre. He mentions it in this thread:

I think I'll try pulling the nfb in v1b for starters and see how I like it. Won't I have to change my nfb resistor if I decide to keep that change?
