I'm guessing he means an ODS with 4 EL-84s.Structo wrote:Built what?analogjunkie wrote:I am curious if there is any layouts out there for el84s and if anyone has built one?

I seem to remember Normster building an EL-84 ODS, but I don't remember much of the details.

I'm sure it could be done, but the first thing that comes into my mind is that EL84 take a lot less voltage, so getting the voltage right across the preamp may be a little difficult.
Having said that I still have heaps to learn myself so I would be interested in what someone with a little more knowledge has to say

Why do you want el84's ?
I would understand your question if you plan on converting a Peavey amp or similar to a Dumble clone, but with Dumble style amps the more power the marrier.
IME there's a great difference between my 50w (465 VDC) ceriatone and my latest DIY ODS/HRM with KT77 (580VDC). The latter being way superior in terms of the lower mid frequency having much better definition and dynamics.
I wouldn't use time on building a Dumble amp with lower than 50 watt - like the 30w you could get from a quartet of el84, let alone the 15w from a duet of same. IMHO its not worth the time and effort.
Scrap the el84 idea and go for 100w instead.
