Yes, I too have had poor experiences from this particular "guru". When I was starting to experiment with mods, I bought his book, several articles, and a few kits. The book does have a few good insights, but for the most part I would not recommend it to anyone. (He told me on the phone that the articles I was buying were not in the book - this was a downright lie, and they would not accept returns)!!
The mod kits had poor and even incomplete instructions - and all of them sounded terrible!! They would not offer ANY tech support on the phone, even to fill in the blanks that were missing in the kit instructions!!

The only bright spot is he uses little of no NFB in most. But he over cooks the reverb driver tube .
Never liked any of the Riviera designs, too messy and ugly sounding . I think these guy sit around and draw them up and never actually play test them.
He said it was for reliability
