Clips 1 and 3 are the Dumble and clip 2 is the Kitty Hawk??

Whatever the answer, I greatly prefered the tone on 1 and 3.

Let's have fun with a riddle:

What you hear are two different amps and three different guitars. One of the amps is an all original 70ies Dumble ODS (second generation #4X). The other one is an original from the seventies too, but I bet that only a handful of members here even know of the existence of this brand and model.

OK, here now is the riddle:

Which clip(s) sport the 70ies ODS and which clip(s) the other 70ies amp? And which kinds of guitars are played? And which amp is the other one?

Have fun!

Ahhhh!! You can tell 1 and 3 are basically the same amp so I'll go with those being the Dumble as well.. as for guitars that's a tough one.. Clip 1 are single coils and clip 3 sounds like a low output humbucker or a pretty hot single tough to really tell.. Clip 1 though sounds like your using an Altec maybe 417 or a JBL 120 I am hearing the ping of the metal cap..
all 3 sound like 50 watters..If we get the riddles do we win the Dumble?
Tony

Hey Max can you shed more light on the Ferris Dumble..Topology mods tweaks etc..Supposedly one of the Grails... Thanks

My guess also would be that 1 and 3 are the same amp which I clearly prefer over 2. Where all 3 clips recorded with the same mics?

When do you intend to solve the riddle? :D

Hi,

sorry, but it went completely out of my mind. But look here now:

https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=11698

Yes, the same mics and recording stuff.

BTW:

I did not post these clips, to demonstrate what kind of ODS tones I like best, but just to demonstrate, that there are a lot of different tones to be found in a Dumble ODS and that perhaps you don't have to spend a fortune (clip 2. with the 50-bucks-flea-markert-amp) for "grail" gear to have fun with an electric guitar (Todd Sharp did use a Rockman for his McVie recordings and not one or both of his ODS 150W).

Cheers,

Max

Hi Tony,

sorry, but I forgot to answer:

You can think of the Farris amp as more or less one of the first "classic" amps with both, a "Ratio" and a "Presence" pot and snubbers, that - as far as I remember - still has the 100 - 1,5/4,7 configuration for V1 and V2. From there as a starting point it has been tweaked over the years to perfectly suit the taste of Steve Farris.

The cleans and the OD sounds this amp produces are extremely tasteful. A clean sound with a great body and chimey highs, that never get shrill or harsh.

The OD sound is very special: Singing sustain but sounding "clean" at the same time. The way the snubbers act is the most tasteful I have ever met in an amp with snubbers. With some snubber-ODS I often had the impression, that the OD gets a bit too artificial and "beautiful" for my personal taste.
The OD of the Farris amp is so special (for my ears), as it still has an all natural tone with a lot of high end "sing" and it is "beautiful", both at the same time.

To say it short and simple: Perhaps nothing special in a technical sense - but (for my ears) the most tasteful voicing I have ever met in a Dumble ODS - period.

Tony, I hope you are fine!

All the best,

Max

Thanks so much for the shout out on the Ferris amp.. Yeah that's been my experience w/ the snubbers as well.. I in most cases try to avoid them if at all possible.. A perfect example of the genius that is Dumble.. knowing exactly how a particular componet/mod does and what that brings to the table even before you apply it (Times that by 100) takes years to attain..(something no layout or pic or a forum provides) After being around the room ( somewhat) with all the different iterations of the ODS the early classics are very special amps indeed (Re-sparking my interest further) and like you say SING's like no other..My Next build an early ODSR.
A Classics Lover!!...
Thanks Again and Take Care.. :D :D
