2 "simple"questions

Post by Steven_nl »

I have an Ceritaone OTS, with a tube fx loop.

Is there a diiference in tone between a bright switch with a 47pf cap and
a 47pf cap on the Master Volume (maybe with a pushpull). If so could you plzz discribe it.

If I ask a friend to lower the slope resistor from 150K to 100K what would be te result? Both on clean and on OD tone
what would you reckommend to compensate for the OD channel?

my lay out:

Hi Steven,
very generally speaking, I believe that is often problematic to change only a single part in amplifiers, as each part affects all the others.
For instance, my amp origially had a 100K slope resistor with a 510 pF
treble cap.Changing the cap to 330 pF was a bit thin, what worked for me
was the usual combination of 330 pF/150 K slope (smoother treble).
Also you have to use different eq settings after such a change.
Same with the bright cap question: Two different things really.
Yes, in both positions the amp will be brighter, depending on the settings of your Volume and Master contols.
Personally, I would not use a small value such as 47 pF(which works great in a Fender Deluxe) for the Bright switch in a D-Style circuit, because normally you set the gain at about noon to achieve a good overdrive tone. The small cap will have very little effect in this case.
The bright cap on the Master will be more pronounced if your using
the amp at lower to medium levels, i.e. between 9 and 11 o´clock.
I believe the reason for the bright cap on the master is to compensate for the treble loss when lowering the Master volume, not so much tone shaping

Hi Marcos
Thanks for that. I use a fx loop which I use as a master volume. My MV is set to about 7 all the time.

I realy like the clean tone of the bluesmaster. For me it's a bit "sweeter" (woody) sounding then the OTS.

Dr Ika advised me to try altering the slope resistor from 150K to 70 or 100K. I do realise this has an impact on the OD as well. I like my OD sound as it is (although I think my PAB is rather boxy), so probably I need to change more.
Dr Ika uses a 3 position switch with 2 different bright caps 47pf and 68pf.
that sounded like a nice option.

I have to rely on a friend (Erwin_ve) to help me with these changes and I realy want to be prepared and not waste his time. So I thought I';d ask a few more opninions.
