it's impossible to nail a particular amp exactly, and there are so many that are already so close it's splitting hairs.

the problem is even if you go part for part and measure the specific value of each part, they all drift a bit over time and with heat, you're just chasing the rabbit down the hole!!

An example:

Larry Carlton has 4 Bludo Drives, all slightly different, and he likes them all. All are clones of his #1 circuit wise. They all do what he needs them to do, but if you put them all in a room they are all a tad different.
+1 and then some.
I have been inside of several, including #124 that started all of this nonsense, and Ry Cooder's "Borderline Special" and they are all a bit different sounding but have a certain sound "stamp" that is recognizable among all three while each having it's own individual personality if you will. I think what the non-builders forget to realize is that it is just a fucking guitar amp, plain and simple and ALL of them are going to be slightly different from amp to amp. So if I get TAG right, he is implying that those of us who build amps wouldn't be able to build one that sounds like his amp? Bullshit. There are MANY talented builders who I am convinced can, and do build an amp as good as, if not better than HAD.
And, because it's your amp means it cannot be cloned unless you are involved with the process? That is idiotic and insulting at the same time.
For such a soft spoken person in public, you seem to be a real asshole behind the keyboard. Why don't you take your Two Rock and your Dumble and go pound sand while us "Doers" concentrate on helping people BUILD amps, you fucking moron.

And then sell the Two-Rock to some cork-sniffing retard on TGP, buy an old Blonde Showman or Tweed Bassman that sounds WAAAYYYYY better and pocket the difference...

Sorry guy. I have yet to hear any clone that sounds very close to a real Dumble with the excepetion of some Tworocks and older Bruno S 100s.

Not me.

You are putting words in my mouth dumb ass. I am going to make SURE it sounds dead on, or I will not accpet the amp. Its a deal we have worked out.

For such a soft spoken person in public, you seem to be a real asshole behind the keyboard.
I have no idea who you are, but you seem like an ass on here as well. Maybe its just the way we both come across while typing. I think I am a very nice guy in person, and on here! :D

Excuse me: But with all due respect, I contributed likely more than I ever got from this forum (back when I participated more often), and did a ton of design work before even joining. I serviced my first Dumble in 1979 on 48th street in NYC. Like many of you, I have evolved quite beyond direct cloning, so you're about 12 years too late.

Now had you said Ceriatone, or the Peavey Custom shop, I might have agreed with you.

Carry on.

Then you OBVIOUSLY haven't heard that many clones! I've played through a lot of real Dumbles, some that you've heard on LOTS of records (Santana, Mayer, Lindley, Harper) and I've also played through a lot of amps made by people on this forum that sound A LOT better. Just because you spent a lot of money doesn't mean that you bought something better!

Vermeer

Post by angelodp »

And so if one owned a Vermeer and could hire a talented artisan to faithfully reproduce it, would that be as exciting as a work by a relatively unknown artist that creates something completely new and fresh that makes your heart and mind soar. Seems like the opportunity for greatness is lost in a search for the magic recipe. Stradivarius was never faithfully reproduced, but there have been many great violins that have been created in his wake. There are so many gifted builders here breaking new ground, thats where the excitement is. Just my 2 cents.

Hey Andy, (yes I am back again so soon.) I have heard most of the "reputable" clones, and also played one of Santans Dumbles, Cristopher Cross's and several others. I have played through a few Dumbles that sounded downright bad, and yes, some of the clones have sounded better than THEM. HOWEVER, I have yet to hear a clone by anyone nail the best Dumbles I have played, although as I have said, TwoRock and Bruno have gotten the closest. I feel Bill Krinard can really do anything he wants, but is just far past the cloning thing. Wow! I have ruffled some feathers! Even getting the porno pics up! Classy!

Again, I am having a clone built which will do one of two things, actually be as good as the best Dumbles I have heard, or not. If it makes it, direct A/B clips will prove it. If not, I will gladly admitt failure. In any case, I am going to do everything I can to hold on to my beloved Dumble for as many years as I can. Its all about the economy on what happens with that. yes, it the spirit of this forum I will most likely post a few things that seem to be different with this amp, and I am told there are some things. Of course you guys and girls have to be on your best behavior! :D Now lets keep this civil, and stop being mad at me because I actually own a killer sounding Dumble! :P

Because I keep getting asked, this is the story on getting the exact tone of this amp.

I had someone steal my entire life savings, and I really need the money I could get from selling it. This happened JUST when the economy crashed and killed 50% of my business. If the economy turns in the spring and my work picks up, I will be able to keep the Dumble, and just use the clone as a spare. If the economy does not pick up, I will be forced to sell, and the amp sounds so damn good, it would kill me not have it. Its really that simple. If I did not lose almost everything, I would have no need or interest in a clone, and just keep the Dumble.

Hah just over 2 hours, pathetic!

You should just leave, no one really wants you here. Your fanboys at TGP would much prefer if you spent more time over there.

I'd be making all these lousy false accusations too if I dropped 55K on an amp. Wow!

Kids starving on the street all over the world, 3 people die each min from AIDs, wars raging all over the world.

And we have a guy who drops 55K on one amp while spending even more money on a "tone quest" to find more amps.

Fuck I'd put my money to way better use. You could start by saving a bit each month by cutting off your Internet.
