Second Build -- Tweaked D'Lite from scratch

Post by IcemanB52 »

Here are pics of my build -- it's a 22W tweaked D'lite. My first build was a Hi-Octane from AX84.com. Great place to start for first-time builders! I researched this heavily before I began and opted to depart from the norm in a couple of areas. Heater wires are shielded and placed in the corner of the chasis. For lead dress, I tried to cross wires at right angles. Amp is very quiet and has an amazing tone. Sounded so good that my guitar teacher asked me to build a 50W version, which I am putting the finishing touches on now. Please feel free to nit-pick or ask qustions.

Wow shielded heaters, never seen that. Not sure how much good that is doing you though. If I was trying to reduce noise I'd opt for DC heaters. What gauge is the core wire, can it handle the current draw?

Nice looking building though. Got any clips?

Heater wire is 24 AWG, which is good for 3.5A. Just to be safe, I run one wire to the preamp valves and a second one to the 6V6s. If anyone has done a comparison of DC heaters vs. shielded vs. elevated center tap vs. Dumble style, I'd be interested to hear.

Beautiful cab!!!!!

Nice build too :-)

For the nitpicking: WHat brand of resistors are you using? I believe the "standard" is to use RN65D resistors on the plates for V1 and V2.

I can't tell you the difference thou  I'm just a noob, fiddleing the last bit with my own 50W build, before putting it in a cab.

Congratz on your build.

Resistors are all Xicon Carbon Film 1W. Will try "stanard" in future build.

Yes interesting heater wiring.

Generally the twisted pair rejects hum well enough.

24ga is bit small for heater wiring. I see you doubled up on all the tubes except V1.

Typically 18 or 20ga is used there.

The only nitpicking I would offer is the soldering at the terminal strips at V1 and V2.

I would solder until the eyelet is full. But it probably isn't an issue unless the wire is not making good contact.

Did you decide to omit the LNFB on V1b?

Overall a great looking amp!

Tom,
Thanks for the feedback. LNFB on V1 purposely omitted. I intended to try the amp with and without it, but got anxous to hear it and never went back...

Yeah I was going to experiment with that and possibly put it on a switch but never got around to it. :D

Oh and by the way, is that a custom made chassis or are those available like that?

Chasis is standard Hammond 16x8x2. Faceplates I designed and had done by BNP lasers. I can provide Corel Draw files if anyone is interested.

So clean you could eat off of it! :o

Let the nitpicking begin:
Running V1A cathode, V1b cathode and V1b plate wires next to each other for an inch or so will improve the sustain and tone - repeat on V2. Also get the tubeleads on the floor and bend them up ar right angles to get up to the board.
