My DIY Widebody Thiele Cab

Post by Blindog »

Here's some pics of my widebody Thiele cab I just finished up. I wanted a cab that would fit a head better than the standard EV TL806 cab. With some direction from a member at the Boogie Board forum, this is the result.

It's the same dimensions as the TL806, except its 22.5 inches wide. There is a false "wall" inside to keep the interior volume the same. I'll fill the void with some plolyfill just in case it would resonate. I used 3/4" birch plywood from Home Depot. I'm pretty happy with the wood quality (not too many voids).

I've got a fresh reconed EVM12L ready to go in. Can't wait to hear it!

Cool!
I have been jonesing for an 806 for some time now.

I have the plans, just need the cash for the wood.
I have a new EVM 12L Classic that I am really liking.

Are you going to cover the cab?

Have you ever seen a 2x12 cab of this type?

Looking forward to a tone report. :D

I think I'm gonna give this stuff a try: http://www.acrytech.com/store.asp?pid=14119

I don't have the patience to learn how to cover in Tolex

There are ways to make the DuraTex look like leather by laying a piece of plastic wrap over the wet finish. They give some examples of application on the website. You can get the stuff tinted in just about any color, just send them a sample.

Well I laughed my ass off when I saw this thread. I thought I was the only truly demented one of the bunch. I did a TL806 Combo last year. Only instead of going wide, I went deep. I like yours better!! :D

Cheers! Brian

The Duratex stuff looks interesting but I'm wondering if the pickup bedliner stuff would be cheaper?

I'll bet you could find somebody in your town that would spray your cab for less than a gallon of that Duratex.

What are the dimensions on that cab? It looks a lot like my Rivera Thiele, except the Rivera has a round port.

It's 22.5" wide by 14.5" tall by 13.5" deep. It should be the same as the TL806, but wider.

Tom, I thought about that, but I don't know about the custom tinting. I can get this stuff tinted close to any color. I know you can get the bedliner stuff tinted, but I don't know if they can match something like Coco Bronco, for example. The DuraTex folks say all they need is a sample.

Hey man, yours looks pretty damn good! That's what I call creative. 8)

I'm missing something...what's the advantage here, other than making a heavier cab? :?

G, it's just so Blindog can put his head cab on top of the speaker. The standard-width Thiele cab, as is, is pretty compact. The internal volume of the Thiele design with the wide-body remains the same.

Okay, I get it. Thanks! How important is it that the port be situated on the floor, instead of off to the side? I know on some speakers it makes a big difference in the way the bass response at the port resonance works, but...

It seems a lot of those 806 and Boogie cabs are used sideways.

I wouldn't think it would matter, after all gravity does't really affect bass waves does it?

Here's one with the feet on the side.

Gravity doesn't affect bass waves?

No, seriously...I think it just has more to do the interaction between the port and the adjacent surface. It may not matter...I'm trying to figure out if I have my own myth to dispel.

Boogie obviously didn't care...thanks for the pic. It's interesting, the one real 806 cab I tried, I was impressed by the bass response, but I found myself thinking that it sounded like a small box. Almost made me think that, if you're going to build a bigger box anyway, do so, but re-tune the port instead of blocking off that section of the box.

I've tried mine sitting with the port on the side and on the bottom. It's a subtle difference at best. In general you can't really hear it unless you're in a fairly large room and pushing a lot of bottom end.

The EV instructions show that you can cover the middle port and it will roll off the bass response.
