Holiday Project Amps

Post by glasman »

I had some time between Christmas and New years and thought I would build a couple of amps, just to waste some time (I am waiting on chassis for my commercial amps).

I built two of these on some surplus 7x17x3 chassis I picked up years ago at Antique Electronics. From bare chassis to complete amps in one week. New record for me. I will post additional pictures when I get the cabinets covered.

One of the amps is a 70's style with 100K plates and the other is a standard 220K/150K Skyliner style. Both sound great, BUT VERY different.

Let me know what you think.

Beautiful work - one of the PT's must have taps for the relay supply.

You are correct, it was a pull from my prototype amp that was collecting dust. It did have any other use so I thought.. what the hell. It is a touch overkill.

One amp has a GW tranny and the other amp has a Marshall 50W replacement tranny. The GW is good for 500ma, the Marxhall for about 190 :).

Gary, very nice work! As you know, I'm a big fan. :D

Which one is the 70's amp? I do not see the typical phaseinverter values, OD entrance and I see local NFB on V1b? Or did you use the later 70's tonestack values in a modern amp? It looks -and will surely sound- awesome. :D

I am working on a 70 based amp myself. I will include a Dumbleator. The trannies are a kind gift from Alan Philips. :D It has a dual master topology and is of the earlier 70's, gainier variety. No PAB.

The 70's amp uses a combionation of several different types.

1. .1uf and .05uf tone caps, 250KB, 100KB 250KB pots. I may switch out the 250KB treble for a 250KA for better control.
2. 100K plates and 25uf bypass on V1 and 5uf on V2.
3. CL2 coupler started at .01uf, but I later up'd it to .05uf for a little bass.
4. OD section is pretty standard fair except for a couple of tricks in OD2

5. PI is standard late modern style, 110/120 10K trim, 820/24K with 4.75K / 390 presence. I am still played with vairous components.

IN the picture, the 70's voice in on the left (no extra tranny).

One is a freebie for a local player, one I will probably keep for myself.

Very nice work as usual..Can you explain the sonic qualities of the 70's version vers the later skyliner.. I was thinking of building one of the earlier models for my personal collection .. I am a big fan of Lindley's JB stuff..The running on empty tone still gives me goose bumps.. Thanks!!!

I find the 70's front end (this is not a pure 70's style amp) has a fuzziness around the notes that is very pleasing. The tone itself is brighter and more diffused as compared to the fast / focussed sound of a Skyliner stack. It also does not have as much bass content, but still overall very balanced.

I am going to fiddle with the 70's amp a little more after NAMM and see what happens. I do like it a lot.

If the question was directed to me, those are Winged C's (Svetlana in the EU) and they work out well.

Gary
Thanks for the description.. After going around the block on all the Dumble versions..Including the Music man Non HRM my current fave.. Very INTENSE!! amp The 70's is the one I have yet to build..I always find myself coming back to the Non HRM Skyliner.. The HRM and Bluesmaster seems to be the better amp suited for the masses as most people gravatate more tword the more agressive OD tone..
For me personally I like the smoother more compressed tone as well as (some people might disagree) more interactive and to me more musical sounding.. Looking at the overall layout of the 70's design I see myself tweaking the OD entrance network.. Is there anything else you think need touching up with that design...Thanks

The amp Gary built is more like an early 80's since he used the normal phase inverter and the 80's pre OD network. Those are cool amps. :D

I Like the Winged C also but I'am curious what you think about the TAD Electrolytics. I'am running out of Sprague's and looking for a good alternative for Dmbl clones.

HI Henk,

Not sure on the TAD EC's. The ones that are in these amps are Ruby (magic parts) items and they normally test about 1 ohm for ESR and I have been using them now for 3 years without any issues.

Gawd only knowns who they source them from, but would suspect from Asia.

They look the same TAD uses. I used them in other amps with good results. Never used them in a Dmbl or TW clone.
In other amps it seems they need some break in time. They need a month or so to get smoother. Tryed some F&T's and JJ's also and think they are nice Sprague replacements.
