sss gut shots or circuit layout

Post by wawa »

if any one has any info they would like to share in regards to gut shots or circuits for an SRV inspired amp ala SSS that would be appreciated.

I have been through this forum collecting all the info I can, I'm looking for any other info not commonly shared

i have a few other question:
was SRV's silver SSS amp like the EF86 pentode based style ala "aligator amp" discussed on the forum or standard 12ax7, other? there is alot of conflicting info on this.

I have seen the gut shots of others mystic, two rock but not much help to me I'm affraid.

The pentode amp was not the same as the SSS that SRV had. I believe that the pentode amp was the only amp like it. There were different SSS' for different players. You can look around here for the info on the SSS all you want, but there is a lack of information on exactly how the reverb is wired(send, return, and mix). The placement of the hi/low filters in the circuit has been discussed, but the values attached to the filters and how to correctly wire these filters has not been touched upon. The reverb and filter knobs are the missing link in the SSS puzzle, but I do not believe that this information will be given up freely as the propensity for someone to start selling amps is high and the propensity for those individuals to reciprocate knowledge to the boards is very, very low. To this date there has only been one company to copy the SSS and that amp is Two-Rock's Sterling. It had the filters, reverb, and all. These units went for $10k so as compared to the $3k for their overdrive style. Now that everyone is selling the ODS copies the margin for profitability that a seasoned and knowledgeable amp builder possesed has dwindled so they have to drop their prices or take a hit to keep up with the market. Do you really want to hear what a half assed SSS would sound like anyways. If the circuit was made available crappy foreign knockoffs would inundate the market. If you really want an SSS copy you will have to look at the sterling pics and try to copy the filters and engineer a reverb with a send, return, and mix circuit. Good luck to you on that one.
