Question.....not for purest......Rocket Content

Post by Blind Lemon »

because I'm not really interested in an exact clone. I got some goodies from RJ to build an amp "based" on the Rocket schematic.

The question is why waste a triode, why not parallel the triode in V1?" It will increase gain very little but it will fatten it up. It just seems like a waste.

BTW This may be my first post here.

BTWW I got to meet RJ when he was in town over the holiday, hell of a nice guy.

That's what I did in mine but I must admit I haven't compared it without the triodes paralleled (it sounds so good that I'm not inclined to mess with it).

Also, in the orig Rocket V1a and V1b are both used...it's one of the V2 triodes that isn't used. So for those going for more of a clone then that's another issue.

I also thought...why not add a jack and knob and have an AC30 Normal channel too?

But in the end...sometimes I wonder why an unused triode bugs me so much. But for whatever reason it does!

Shameful to let an unused triode sit silently. I used mine a/la Matchless,
it turned out quite nicely. BOL.

Probably a decent idea to tackle. It'll add a slight bit o' gain - not a terrible thing to do in a Rocket as it won't send it over the top, and it provides some noise rejection - not a terrible thing to do in most any amp.

From lunchtime previous conversations, with guitars plugged in to varous iterations of Rockets, with RJ over the last several months, I believe it is on the List of Things to Do. Since, as already noted, it will require a lil' rewire of the leads, it is not an immediatly instant change but, once done, does lend itself to an easy A-B comparo with a simple switch.

Note: If you want to make it a permanent mod and don't have any Rocket Police in your neighborhood, you might choose to implement two input jacks, "Single" and "Parallel", as in the Lite III project at AX84.com.

Blind Lemon - Good to see you among us - welcome!

As Zippy mentioned - I have done this very thing to one of my Rocket builds. I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I have not yet run it through it's paces. It's one of many that I need to get into a cabinet and start using them!

You can read a bit about this as well as a handful of other tweak ideas at the following post

I'd love to see the details on your project as you progress.

Again, Welcome!!

Spent the day yesterday drawing up the layout freehand and watching collage ball (I'm from Okla.).

I got the freehand done and when I get it drawn up in ExpressSCH I'll post it if anyone is interested. It's unpolished but it'll get me through what I want to do. Really about the only difference in the RockIt board is I split V1 cathode.

Unused triode? Is that all you're worried about? How about the unused space between V2 and V3? Or those unused bright switch and pot holes in Allyn's chassis? And what about the wasted PI input? Huh? That's the kind of stuff that just bugs the heck out of me!!!

OK, just kidding. I like Zippy's idea of using hi-lo inputs ala the Lite IIb.

BTW, if you build a Rocket with reverb, you'll use up all of those wasted items I mentioned in my rant.

I did that. I find I seldom use the single input, the parallel sounds far better.

Hey, I'm with you, Normster. RJ has heard me rant and rail time and again that the Rocket needs a mid knob. Oh, you were only kidding?

Thanks for the correction as to the Lite IIb mod. I haven't looked at those in a long time. I do think that the two-input jack arrangement is rather elegant.

Yeah, only half kidding. I finished a build yesterday that's definately not for Rocket purists. Rocket preamp, reverb, fixed bias EL34s, and SS rectifier. At first I didn't like it as much as my straight-up Rocket, but I just tried it through a Mesa 1x12" cab with a G12H30 and it's one gutsy sumbich!

Forgot to mention, it's also built into a backwards chassis!

Hey Normster;
I that pot, inside on the right, for a VVR. If so how do you like it. I've used the different MVs and don't like any of them much.

Normster, I like your ideas.

I have been thinking about building one using 6L6s, reverb and some switching capabilities (two channel thing).

That's a bias adjustment. I suppose I could have used a 15mm trim pot, but I really like beefy bias pots. I still haven't tried the VVR.

Thanks, Mark. Always tweaking, always hoping for that "happy accident."
