BM PI vs. the Fendery PI

Post by Fischerman »

Just wanted to start a discussion on the two PIs. heisthl made a comment in another thread (i.e. he said the BM PI has less low end clarity) that made me think such a thread might be informative (as if it hasn't been done before :D)

I'm sure everyone knows that the Fendery PI is exactly that...a BF Fender PI with a Presence control added...and the BM PI is just a straight up 'later' Marshall PI (aside from negligible value tweeks...well...I think they are negligible but maybe you feel differently?).

Here's a start...feel free to correct any of these you think are incorrect (please state why though):

The Fendery PI is more 'inherently' balanced than BM because of the higher tail.

Fendery PI has a little less gain than BM mostly due to the Rk.

Fendery PI sounds more 'refined' for lack of a better word...BM sounds more 'raw'. I dunno why though...the Presence circuits are different so it may be due to that.

BM PI is more likely to 'bark and bite' than the Fendery PI.

Do you prefer either PI much more than the other in a 50W vs. a 100W amp? That is; perhaps a 100W amp can sound great with either PI but with a 50W amp it's best to stick with...which PI?
Do you prefer either PI much more than the other in an EL34 amp vs. a 6L6 amp?
Do you prefer either PI much more than the other in a non-HRM vs. HRM?
