What are the good mods out there without going to the expense of the Mercury Magnetics mod?

check out www.turretboards.com they have a really cool easy to build or buy pre build Point to Point kit for the Valve Jr. as well as a few mods for fender marshall and vox'n the circuit. the power transformer is just fine so you are good keep the original, as for output iron do a google search I don't have the part in front of me but it's a hammond 35 watt transformer with the same color coded wires it's under $50 shipped, and comes up as an alt to the mercury retrofit. Next and probably the most important of all get some nice tubes! the Sovteks are good work horse tubes but if you are going threw all the effort of moding the amp you should really start with a quality tube! This amp is a great chance to truly hear the difference in preamp and power tubes since it only uses one of each.

hope it helps, happy building
