2-7189 Express

Post by skyboltone »

Here are some pictures.....too many maybe of an amp built for one of our members. It uses a torroid PT, an Hammond Organ 8K OT, 12VAC filaments, filaments raised 50VDC above ground with hum balance pot, and at the owners request all metal film resistors. Dartanion and I lit it up this afternoon and it's a winner. The 7189s are MUCH darker than EL-84s.

Hey, that's what was in the drawer! It's a green switch tip on the bright caps though :D I'm getting a painful medical proceedure tomorrow, it goes out Thuesday I hope. Hey Tim, does a epidural between C5 and C6 hurt? Kinda reminds me of Jeff Foxworthy's bit about where's my sign? We want you to put on this shark proof suit and jump into this pool with all these sharks and tell us if it hurts.......

You should like this amp a lot! Tons of gain, great sustain and feedsback on command. All things a wreck should be.

What a difference in tone between the Russian Military eq. 7189 to the NS Mullard EL84. The 7189s are clearly darker and smokey compared to the Mullards. The Mullards sound good, but are all about bright chiming mids and highs. Anyone who thinks their Liverpool is too bright needs to try these out.

Hey, good luck with the medical crap.
We compared it to Dart's liverpool cathode biased build. We found that his was much brighter than yours until we put your tubes in his amp and found out that the 7189s are just a darker sounding tube. The nice thing is that you can run EL-84s in this little guy, re-bias and get that sharp cutting jangle that EL-84s are famous for. We played it through a brand new G12-65 (no break in time) and my 4/10s cabinet. The 4/10s is about the same volume but more complex harmonically. We used his PRS custom 24, a great 74 original strat, and my Heritage H-535. All in all a great workout. I changed the bias circuit just a tad this afternoon and it's good to go now.

Yeah, wrecks really sound best with a multi-speaker cab. The 410 was a great combo with this amp.

I love my strat, but a strat and a wreck can be a love hate relationship. You've got to be on your game or you'll look foolish

Never bothered me before...

I'm excited to hear this is "darker" sounding...I'm a fan of heavier darker tones. I like more mahogany and less maple...more basswood and less ash.

I'll be running this into a Vintage 30 2x12...Should I look into getting another speaker to replace one of the V30's with? If so, which?

Where would be a good place to source valves? Does the forum have a sponsor?

I've heard Glen talk about using a 40ft cable with his...does anyone else do this? Too bad his is octal...perhaps he just needs some 7189s?

I'd stick with the 7189 equivalents as the darkness should help to lessen the brutal harshness in the upper mids and highs of V30s. To each there own though. Some people love em.

I love seeing one of my faceplates pop up in an amp thread unexpectedly. Especially one that looks so damn good!

I won't comment on the knobs and such.

I had the procedure done in my lumbar region and it hurt like hell!
I had six injections done there with a local anesthetic and a small amount of steroids to combat low back pain.
Each time he stuck a needle in my back I about jumped off the table.
He acted like I was being a wuss and said that most people didn't think it was that bad.
Worst pain I have ever experienced and I have had two orthopedic surgeries that didn't compare to this pain level.

I asked my wife about it since she is a medical assistant and she talked to several people who had a similar treatment as I did and they all said without a doubt it was very painful.

Don't mean to scare you but I would ask to see if you can be sedated before the injections, something like Versed. ( Midazolam hydrochloride )

I won't ever have it done again without some kind of sedation.
Tom

Now, Dan, calm down. It's just going to be a little prick here on the back of your neck  You'll hardly know it's going on  It'll be over before you know it  Now just sit here and relax
Whispering to the nurse, "Hand me that 18 ga, 4" needle."
Seriously, Dan, I hope it's epidural steroids, 'cause that's a little high for epidural anesthesia :D If your neck's giving you a lot of pain, the needle stick may be of little consequence. Still, I can't say it's the most fun you'll have for a quarter. I just skipped the injections and had mine operated on several years ago. I haven't had any trouble since. If you think neck and back injections hurt, try having bone grafts (for my neck) taken out of your pelvic rim  But I figured if my cleft palate kids could stand it, I could :D I hope it goes well, my friend :D

I heard you guys in SF are a colorful lot
BTW, the amp looks REAL nice :!: Not bad work for a guy who lives on a boat and has his workshop in a trailer And has to deal with intermittent monsoons :D

Update time: Well, this is being typed with a pencil held between my upper lip and my nostrils. Held there securely by a pony clamp and the liberal application of 3M #204 CA glue. Not bad except it makes it so hard to type the letter D, plus any plosives like P and B require me to stop and clear my ears after typing them. I'm able to do that by jamming the pencil in the sliding companionway door and blowing hard then wishing I could yawn energetically......Still, being paralyzed from the upper jaw down is not all bad. I can still make love to my wife provided we do it Eskimo style; a technique developed as a result of hanging around nekid in Arctic weather waiting for the mood to strike.

Anyway, just kidding :D ! It was a non-event. I told Ernie the Doc that either "I get sedation or nobody gets out of this room alive". He looked at me, then he looked at the gun, then he looked at me and said OK. A non event. I felt nothing though I did feel a little silly when they started asking me questions in that alien language. I made what replies seemed appropriate in my somewhat limited Russian Vulgate; a task made more difficult by the duct tape. I wonder, do they always duct tape the patients mouth shut? I told Ernie and all the staff that I was looking forward to seeing them all again. He mumbled something about a pig's ass. A great time was had by all. I would encourage all of you to give it a try sometime.

Now, back on topic. What the heck were we talking about?
