Whats the highest gain amp you know of with a 1K8/1uF fender style stage?

Post by Nickerz »

Been playing around with the input variations and while off the top of my head I know an endless number of Marshall or Soldano style amps, I can't think of any Fender style. I know a lot of the medium gain amps are more or less JCM800 clones with fender stages (Laney, Orange etc), but curious what modern high gain amps are still using the Fender style stage.

Fender usually uses a 100k at the plate.
Many high gain amps use 220k (at least for V1)
Friedmann uses 220k + 100k for V1.

And is almost invariably 1k5 and 22uF at the cathode

About 10 years ago a customer dropped off a Budda amp head here. It was in perfect working order - he wanted my review on build quality & sound. That amp sounded like a really good late 60s - early 70's Marshall 50W, very attractive to the ear. When I peered inside I noted the circuit pretty well followed the venerable 50W BUT Budda took care to select different value bypass caps & interstage caps, so as to limit the low frequency extension of the circuit. Good move! I don't recall the exact values, but I can recommend, if you want to suppress low frequency "fluff" your 1K8/1uF cathode combination is a good start. Of course, you can experiment & find out what suits your ears/guitar/speakers best by varying the cathode resistor especially in the first stage preamp.

Have fun & let us know what you settle on.

The Pignose GV40 amp who's schematic can be found on line is a great starting point in terms of needed gain and interstage frequency roll off and keeping the amp from farting out when played cranked!

The Blue guitar site has a simple 1 resistor 1 tube mod that turns the amp to being far better for straight up blues playing for this amp.

I think the Engl Savage and Powerball might use it, but with higher plate voltage.
