Brimar Valves - Restarting Production
http://brimaruk.com/about-us/great-brit ... e-project/
Brimar are trying to start up valve production again in the UK. They're looking for people to be part of the project team. They already have the funding apparently. This is extremely exciting news if it actually happens!

OK! My near eyesight is failing, but I can pull a handle for 10 hours a day!
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com
Re: Brimar Valves - Restarting Production
fingers crossed its more successful than the 'mullard' blackburn-microtech tube revival thingy three or four years back.
He who dies with the most tubes... wins
Re: Brimar Valves - Restarting Production
It matters not what brand they use to label the product. What counts is what they produce. It says they are acquiring old Mullard equipment. That sounds like a very good start. Here's hoping...

Re: Brimar Valves - Restarting Production
If they can match the quality of the original BRIMAR offerings that would be great.
Now should any BRIMAR guys be looking in??
What is nobody making and is rapidly becoming rocking horse poo availability?
We want a 6GW8/ECL86..
Stunning in both HiFi and Git Amps.
Pull the triode section from your 12AX7 production line and mate it with the original power output pentode. 2nd best, mate it with the pentode from a possible 6M5/EL80 production line.(another wonderful tube..)
Cheers,
Ian

And a few 12A_7s, 5751s, EF86s, EL84s. EL34s, KT66s, KT77s, KT88s would be nice too.

Re: Brimar Valves - Restarting Production
Meh, I don't think much for their old equipment claim, bet that's just the marketing dept. It wasn't the equipment that made old tubes good it was the QC and that the world ran and relied on those things. I'd rather they have the latest high tech digital gizmos to work with but copy the old fashioned concept of good value with high quality. All I know for sure is any tube built to old standards will cost an awful lot in 2016 as there are no economies of scale, so I'm not optimistic.Phil_S wrote:It matters not what brand they use to label the product. Re: Brimar Valves - Restarting Production
I can see where you're coming from. Didn't Ei buy Telefunken's equipment but make lower grade valves?
Re: Brimar Valves - Restarting Production
Pledged funding, that's akin to being half pregnant...LOL
So having sourced the vintage vac tube manufacturing equipment is just one part of the equation, if you are not the using the exact same materials, coatings, etc it's just the same old modern song.
This ain't rocket science; if one could make modern preamp tubes which sounded or were as robust as coveted vintage models, sell them for $9.95 and manage to make a profit, it would have been done already.
These things pop up from time to time and always manage to never truly come to fruition because it's not a viable business model. Nevertheless, you always go the rebranded route as a certain amount will sell just based on the label on the box.

EI made good tubes for a time, but their factory had an annoying habit of getting bombed and eventually closed. Also, the machinery got old and out of tolerance and was not properly maintained...

Yes EI very good tubes (at least 12AX7) IF got a good one.FUCHSAUDIO wrote:Littlewyan wrote:I can see where you're coming from. Didn't Ei buy Telefunken's equipment but make lower grade valves?

A know a company here in Sweden that are matching and testing tubes, an they told me that 40-50% of the 12AX7 was bad.
So your teori of the machinery got old and out of tolerance, hold water
But getting bombed don't seam to be true if should believe EI homepage:

But on outer hand that page have not been updated since 2002

There may be other tube companies coming into play in the future. I'll try to share what I can, when I can.

Re: Brimar Valves - Restarting Production
In America would be nice.
But wherever, if they use pure materials, precision winding, hard vacuums and for gods sake a good QC/QA program, that will be a good start.
