Dynaco A470 (Real) Should I Use It In A JTM/JPM/2204?

Post by rp »

Good idea, bad idea? Anyone done it? Any particular Marshall circuit it sounded best in?

I'm broke and bored but I have a blank Watts chassis, a Marstran PT and the old Dynaco A470, plenty of tubes - all the expensive stuff, so I could do some drilling and punching and bolting and get something started. I'm fidgety and idle hands do the devils work.

Then I would have three incomplete amps lying around waiting for flush times. I think this is the tube geek equivalent of the motorhead with a couple cars on blocks sitting in the front yard.

Go for it?

Sunn used 'em in their medium size tube guitar amps, Sorado for one. You don't have to copy their (Dynaco) drive circuit. I'd expect 30-40 watts of clean volume, a little rolled off in the low end when pushed hard, just fine for a guitar amp.

Choice is, either build something different from what you already have, or follow up success with even more success similar to what you already have. Decisions decisions decisions.... you could think TW Express too.

Think up sumpin' and go for it motorhead!
down technical blind alleys . . .

Go for it unless you worship the breed it came from.

I built a 4xEL84 very high gain circuit with a A470S and it was killer.
