Monkeymatic 18TMB

Post by xtian »

I'm planning an 18-watt build, standard two channel with tremolo, using Hammond iron and a Weber 6Mx chassis. I want just one set of hi/lo input jacks, internally jumpered like my 1987 builds. Any drawback to permanently jumpered inputs?

Building out the chassis. This is going to be an interesting puzzle, because I've placed the three preamp tubes up front near the pots, and the power tubes and recto in the rear. PT and OT are oriented for zero hum using headphone trick.

I agree with Matt. You may have to use mixing resistors for the two channels, fed into one side of the PI. I love your chassis placement, it looks like you really put some thought into it.

Wait, I thought I have had experience jumpering the inputs on Marshall 1974 builds. Not?

Crap. Let me slow down and choose a friggin' circuit before I commit.

Thanks, Lou. It's organic, actually. The transformers told me where they wanted to be, for least noise.

I just use one jack and hi pot and lo pot so you can mix the jumpering effect.

That's what I was imagining.

Matt, what do you like in a 2x el84 build?

How about the 2061X, its got 2 12ax7's and 2 El84. Looks interesting in a minimalist kinda way.
And theres a mod to cascade the two channels...different!

In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

Yes, this is a personal build, so tackling a new flavor is always interesting to me. Yes, 1987/2203 is covered, and blackface Fender combos are what I typically play with my band, mic'd up and at low volume. I played a 2061 once--thought it was pretty fun.

This is a tranny set from Hammond AO-43, I think, which ran a pair of EL84s. 330-0-330 unloaded. Planning to use a high-loss rectifier tube, but also ordered a pair of 50ohm, 25watt resistors in case I want to burn some B+. Yes, I also have the choke that came with the set.

What you got up your sleeve, Matt?

I do like the simplicity and angry-beaver design (no NFB) of the 2061. But the two channels are identical. Room for improvement?

You could add a switch to jumper the channels similar to the 1974 circuit. Or another switch to go from shared cathode to split cathode like a 1987. And another to switch from parallel/split to cascaded (one-wire mod). There is a Rig Rundown or other gear demo of Paul Gilbert playing his pedalboard through a 2061X into a 4x12. Worth checking out.
