Transformer question

Post by deiseldave »

Hello - I have these transformers (see attached), and am wondering how to milk the most out of them. I recently built a Plexi6V6, and am now considering a "D" style, for the next.
To get to the point, instead of 6V6 output, I'm thinking EL-34 or 6L6's. But I'm not sure if the current limitations of the transformers is something I need to design around. Or, if I should just copy a standard (2) EL34 or 6L6 design, and it should be fine, just breaking up early.
Thanks in advance for advice, and pointing me in the right direction.

EL34 heater current draw is 1.5A.

6L6 heater current draw is 0.9A

12AX7 draws 300mA per heater.

That transformer is rated at 5A heater current. So, a couple of 6L6 power tubes or a pair of EL34's, and three-or-four 12AX7 type tubes would be okay. However, I guess the output transformer rating/load will play into whether the current drain on the B+ rail would be enough at 150mA.

So, will I hurt anything if I just follow a standard (2) tube push-pull 6L6 or El34 output? Or, will the PT/OT limits naturally keep it from a melt down?

I'll be camping for a week with my son. So, if someone responds, and I don't reply in a week, that's the reason. Thanks.

You're probably underpowered a tad for 6l6s. Try push pull el84s
