Do i have to use the one with the plastic insert? I picked up like 10 or 12 10K linear pots from an exhibit here at work we didnt even use - they are alpha 1/2 watt jobbies (like the normal ones we use for amp controls)
can I use this and put a plastic knob on it?

Disclaimer : I do realize most people dont put this on a knob because of the temptation for knob twiddlers to mess with it, but its going to be inside the amp and for a personal amp build.

Those should work just fine. I actually prefer to use mult-turn pots for bias adjustment because they seem to drift less over time.

X2 on the 20 turn trimmer!
If you use a pot, install build out resistors( start off around 22k) around the pots two out side lugs so that if the wiper (center lug) goes intermitant it will pass a higher bias voltage and not red plate and burn up your tubes and maybe OT.
The amp may sound like crap but it sure saves your tubes!

I'd be concerned about rotation drift with an ordinary pot. If you must use it, maybe you set it, remove the knob, and put some lacquer around where the shaft meets the body to keep it from turning. IMO, you are better off using the correct type of pot.
