Mullard Tropical Fish

Post by Blackburn »

Anyone used them in a simple low volt circuit? They also come in a 400v rating, which I've acquired two of at .022uf. I've stockpiled a bunch of pairs of various NOS .022uf caps for little SE 6V6 amps just to have fun with and check out the tonal differences. Variations in these circuits are usually very noticeable. My favorites are the Champion 600 rebuilds I've done paired with Weber's Signature 6" AlNiCo.

I was thinking in the next one I'd try these. I know they weren't made to the same standards as many other old caps, but as long as they don't leak and/or break I'm itching to check them out.

I was going to start using them is some amps but read that they fail often and may be unreliable in amps - but good for pedals.

I can't afford to take a risk like that.

But please - post your results - I am interested in what you discover.

The amp I'm planning on using them in will probably be a busted Champion 600 that I'll gut. If they turn out to be problematic, leaky or otherwise, no big deal. I didn't pay too much at all for the pair. I have heard the same things you report though, so I'll see what comes. I'll test them for leakage prior to wiring them in. I'm guessing with these it's longevity that is the real test.

For me, a small SE amp like this isn't a hassle at all to test stuff out or worry about losing some major components, of which there are none. :)

Just clipped in those fish to a little amp I had lying around and they're dripping 30 mills a piece. I've had old pulls leak before on a much larger scale (Like 8V) and those came right out, but is this amount too much? One of the newish Sozos in there read about 8-10 mills so I'm wondering what you guys would call over the limit.
