d-lite OT different primaries

Post by daz »

Hi there,
I'm getting some transformers custom made for d'lite build. The OT I'm getting made will have multiples primaries 5.2k & 6.6K (want to run 6l6 or el34).

Is it o.k to have it switchable and would I need to make any adjustments to the layout values to accomodate this compared to the kit trannies that are offered?
Also I was reading on tonesluts page that "The lower gauss M27 steel is chosen to provide richer overtones and slightly fuller bass than the more common M6 laminations".
what are the std kit trannies made of? And would using m27 possibly make any improvement?

One other question too, everyone seems to do clips that sound like robben ford when they complete an amp. Is it possible for the amp NOT to sound like robben ford and just simply give a great rock tone?
from the clips I hear it's got a very distinctive tone (rb).
No offensive I love robben ford and his tone but I don't want a amp just to sound like him.. I wanna sound like me!

Many thanks in advance :D

Standard D'Lite OT is 8K primary, 4-8-16 secondary, M27.

Did you check the D'Lite clips on my site?
They are have a more 'rock' sound

While waiting on my board set I am gathering the rest of the parts. I have a spare Heyboer 18watt OT - 8k primary 4,8,16 secondary. Will this work in the D'Lite?

Yes! Brownnote's first prototype used an 18watt OPT and sounded awesome.

The short answer is absolutely yes!
You have to expect if you build a Dumble correctly that it will have a certain sonic signature. The Robben sound is just a reference point. Having said that, I find these amps to be incredibly versatile and if you just experiment with the tone and gain systems you can create a whole range of sounds. If you like power amp distortion this may not be the amp for you as Dumble got most of his sound out of the pre-amp. But even then, you can still use a Dumble style pre-amp and tweak the power section to your liking. By all means go for the tone that works for you! Just don't be in a hurry and you have to be willing to experiment with component values. I definitely went "off the reservation" on my 50 watter. I have not built a D-Lite (yet!) but from the clips I have heard, you can't go wrong. I would imagine since they are smaller wattage, that you could get some good output breakup if you want that sound without attacting the police. Looks like the best of both worlds there. Good luck!

Cool. Thanks Normster!

Question 2: I have a credit with Mojo for some mis-shipped parts. They do not list the secondaries for the PT's on their web-site. Is there a suitable Mojo sub for the PT?

Deric-
Just order the Marshall 18 watt clone OT. I think their part number is 7000118. Hope this helps.

OK...the PT's I've used so far have been 340-0-340, 350-0-350, 325-0-325.
An 18watt PT will be around 270v-300v, which will probably sound fine, but I'd recommend higher voltage if you want an more open sound, lower for more compressed.

Can You tell me what kind of power transformer was used in the clip http://www.brownnote.net/shared/sounds/ ... lite01.mp3 ?
Was it 325-0-325 or closer to 350-0-350 ? I'm just decideing what tranny to buy for my 2x6V6 HRM -project.
