OK Who wants a swirlie?

Post by HeeBGB »

Just pulled it out of storage. Everything works. I may put it on CL soon but for now I am in swirlie heaven!

No horn? I've got a cabinet and a bunch of motors and belts and horns and drivers and bass speakers and bass swirly gizmos to make one but never got past "wow ain't I lucky" part. I really do need to thin stuff out around here.

Nah the horn equipped models are 'spensive. Besides Stevie used a model 16. Here is a REALLY badly recorded sound clip. You can hear me step on the footswitch to turn off the rotor. So the last couple bars are dry signal. Recorded with my iphone......BADLY!

OH it's also only a single speed Model 25 Leslie

What a great sound. I need to find a high power Atlas driver for my Hammond horn, otherwise I got everything. I bought it for my M3 and it's all in storage.

When I was about 7 and newly started on violin in school I told my teacher that I wanted to grow up to be a musician. She said, Danny, you can't do that. I nearly burst into tears but mastered myself and asked why? She said "You can either grow up or you can become a musician but you can't do both"

So I collect stuff I'll never get around to using.

I've found that University ID-75 or ID-40 drivers work well too. Phenolic diaphragm so they don't reach "too far" into the upper freq's. Roll off naturally @ 6K.

Funny thing, guys. I have one of these 12" no horn Leslies right in front of me. I've been using it as my computer desk since Feb. 2000.

Years ago someone gave me a box of Leslie bits including horn & motors & pulleys & crossover & all. It's been a back burner project to add a horn deck to my 125 Leslie. No worries about the lack of louver slots on top. Having used Leslie 147 a lot with guitar, I had to cover up the louvers anyway to keep the horn from annoying the drummer... imagine that. One of these days - look out. I'll get a round tuit.

Yes once you start playing guitar thru a Leslie it's hard to stop. Positively addicting.

What a beautiful sound, HeeBGB!! Great song too, perfect for demoing the box.

Thanks for the tip Leo. I knew there were others around but haven't really thought about that project for quite awhile.

I would strongly suggest to those who have never played a guitar through a leslie to DO NOT DO IT.

You'll be ruined for life and no rotating speaker emulator will ever satisfy. :-)

I had a keyboard player that had that same model. I'm trying to remember the organ. It was either a Farfisa or Vox. Had reversed key colors.

Damn that Leslie was heavy.

Sugaree too, and dozens more besides. Leslie is the secret ingredient. Makes most anything sound good.

What? How could he tell? Most drummers are too busy annoying evryone in the room to notice. As soon as I found out that the louvers annoyed the drummer, they would have stayed open forever. Did he cover up his too loud cymbals in exchange for the louvers? Somehow, I doubt it.

Those Leslies are great. I love'em. Yours looks great. I lost my commitment to carrying one for guitar cause I don't use it often enough in the course of a gig to justify the load. I went to a Dynacord CLS-222. It's expensive and not quite a Leslie, but it's light.

The drummer in question was some guy from Oklahoma named Jaime Oldaker. And he could play with dynamics - including quietly. (He really detested having a gate on the kick mic.) Wanted to keep him happy & on my side. In this instance I was the guitar tech, but often had to play at soundchecks. Taping off the louvers with some carpet & gaffer - if that kept him happy it's a small price to pay. I'd work with him again in an instant if I had the chance.

CLS-222 not half bad, it ramps speed up & down like the real thing, and takes up only one rack space. But, there's nothing like the real thing baby...

I have a baldwin 1-12" scoop that I gutted. I was planning on putting in a hummer fan motor with a curtis chopper speed controller that would go to an old crybaby for on/off and 50k speed controller. Haven't found a cheap enough broke down crybaby yet to finish the whole thing, and then I started thinking about adding stuff to get the scoop to index to the front when you shut it down and it just got to complicated.

The downward scoops are a good place for a whizzer cone and/or aluminum dustcap, I have an EV sp-12 in mine that has both.

My fender mustang modeling amp is stereo and has a decent vibratone patch so I've kinda given up on the project if anybody wants it you're welcome to come get it.

Jamie Oldaker is one of my top 5 favorite drummers of all time, maybe even top 3, certainly the one I would most want to play with in a band.

WOW!

That brings back memories of hauling around a Leslie model 147 for guitar playing. We were more movers than musicians! LOL...
In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.
