Gray Input Wire On TWs, Dr. Zs

Post by Blackburn »

Someone in the know want to clue me in as to where I can source this stuff? The one from the input jack to the grid, I mean. I assume this stuff is better at shielding from noise and sharkbears, no? I've never used any kind of special wire in that spot, but I wouldn't mind giving something that may be better a try.

RG-174/U or Apexjr also has different types available.

I have also used old guitar cable you know those thin cheap ones that come with every solid state amp sold around the world.

I forget the code for it but I've had good success with the thin white shielded wire from Steve @ Apex Jr.
Just ask Steve what all the smart guys are using.
That's what I did.

Thanks guys, but that stuff is just a little hardcore for what I had in mind. I have my chassis laid out with V1 pretty close to the input jack and I only need maybe 3 1/2 inches of wire run along the chassis to the grid so that would be kinda tough for the space allotted. Do you guys know if that gray stuff is shielded differently than the other typical wire in the amps?

I would skip it just to see, or wrap it in solid core grounded on one end as a cage. Small run. Maybe you will get away with it? Maybe.

I'd just run a bit of plain wire. If that's a problem you can wrap it as Miles describes. If that doesn't work, post here with a plea for 6" of RG 174U. I predict someone will PM you for your address and then send you a scrap if you really need it.

You might make your own with a bit of copper foil and heat shrink. I was going to say tin foil, but that's really aluminum foil and you'll have a devil of a time grounding one end of that.

You really should be OK with plain wire if your lead dress is careful.

Thanks for all the input, guys. The only reason I thought to ask about the stuff was because I may be doing a build soon where the length between V1 and the input jack will be a bit longer than my regular chassis and I figured it would be wise to inquire. I haven't actually had any excessive problems with hum or oscillations and therefore haven't sought out shielded wire. If I do have any issues, I'll give that RG stuff a try. :)

Well, I found this stuff a while back and figured I'd share with you guys, especially those not wanting to use that thick RG stuff.

I have a lot of this stuff and anyone who wants to buy some from me is free to PM. The smallest amount you can order is 100ft and that's a pretty penny. Don't overspend and just buy what you need from me. :)

I don't want to go less than five feet per order, so there's that. I just have too much to deal with for such small amounts. Let's say, $8 shipped, in a thick envelope, for 5ft. Single conductor, 20AWG, PVC insulation, braided shield.
