Spitfire mod

Post by tsutt »

This is probably going to be a stupid ? i'm kind of tired of it was wondering if it would be realistic to convert it to 6v6's. ot impedance looks to be the problem? Its a west spit ot 4.2k.

If you ran a 16 ohm speaker cab off the 8 ohm tap, this would reflect an 8.4k primary, which is close to what is generally used with 6v6's.

But you could pick up a Deluxe Reverb OT (8k) pretty cheap and use that West OT for another project. It would be great for a half power rocket or an AC10/AC15 clone.

Sounds like a good excuse to build another amp to me :)

NO MONEY funny how not having a job does that to ya. I have another project that might fit better anyway.

I built a spitfire. I liked it at first, but the honeymoon was short lived.

If you've got an EF86 or other small signal pentode laying around, you could do one channel of an AC10.

Or instead of the parallel triodes, put them in series with maybe a BF tone stack in between.

If it were my amp I'd not be too concerned about the 4K OT... EL84's are supposed to be an 8k or so primary as well and yet Matchless is using the 4K in there... Deluxe Reverbs use a 5.6K with 6V6's, not too far off from the Matchless.

If you have the original trannies they are probably some of the most robust, overbuilt on the planet...

I thought Deluxe Reverbs use a 6.6k primary.

Sorry, my bad. The tweed Deluxe uses 8k.

ok, i wasn't sure if 6v6s could run with 4k primary or not not good enough with design stuff yet. not sure how to implement them either. I do have that Guild amp that is a perfect platform for a stingray ef86 12ax7 4 el84s already but kind of tired of 84s. i have a couple of factory amps with 84s don't really need any more. such a dilemna. haha.
